I've shot 2 guns abit. A5 12 ga w/Hastings barrel and a Nkon 2-7 will shoot a 2' group at 50 yards. Which is far as I've tried. This gun is a 3"mag which leaves me hurting when I shoot it much. So I went to 2 3/4 Winchester Supremes and it works well.
The second gun is a 20 ga Rem 1100 with a rifled barrel, all factory. Topped it with a 2-7 Nikon. It will shot 3 shots touching at 50yards. Works well on deer. This gun is a youth model so it has a short stock. Used this a a late doe season when you always had more clothes on. Lighter to carry. Again 2 3/4" Winchesters.
Would use either of these out to 100 yards+

A Marlin 120 12ga. smoothbore with a 3-9 Bushnell. If I use Winchester rifled slugs I can keep a 3" group at 100 yds. The wheels fall off after 100 though.

Remington 1100 20ga with Hastings rifled barrel using Winchester Supreme Partition Gold Slugs 260 gr. I'm in the black at 100 yards with open sights.

Ithaca 37, 20 Ga. smoothy. It will put them all on a pie plate at 50 yards, bead and receiver groove is hi-tech enough.
I am..........disturbed.

A Remington 1100 12 GA with a smoothbore deer barrel with rifle sights. It shoots 2 3/4 sluggers into a pieplate at fifty yards offhand. With different barrels I use it for just about everything. I've got it here now decked out with its trap barrel as my backup turkey gun.
I also have a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel that shoots 3" Brenneke's into the same hole at 50 yards. It is currently beside me, sporting it's 28" turkey barrel.

Ithaca riot smoothbore with a BSA 42mm reddot on a Bsquare saddle mount. Shoots 4" at 75 yards. Killed my biggest buck with #1 buckshot in it at about 25 yards. Thought I had a slug up first, he rolled when I shot and fell with his head on the path, bump.

If you have a remington shotgun you can get a remington Deer Slayer rifled slug barrel for the type of gun that groups really well with sabots or regular slugs. also try slugs from Breneke and the federal brandnames. the breneke "KO" slug works really well.

Larry has an 870 Express with a rifled barrel made by Mossberg that shoots so well it is almost spooky. (This with a 4X Tasco Pronghorn scope that just keeps on taking the abuse generated by the slug gun and coming back for more.) While he was away at college and couldn't make it home for season I used it. It isn't cranky about moving among Winchester Sabots (the plain-janes) or both lengths of Federals in either Hydra-Shock or Barnes. I have an old smooth-bore 37 that I put a Burris Scout Scope on that served very well and very accurately for many years. Larry's gun made me get the yen for a rifled barrel, so I picked up a 1300 which is fussy but shoots Federal Barnes slugs quite well (but not like his gun). I recently took the scope off the 37 and put on some Tru-Glo sights and found out that it would put 3 shots in 6 inches at 100 yards with my eyes and ability.

I just bought one of those NEF slug guns. Took it to the range to see what it could do. Put her on the bench and let her rip. Bang...Ouch! That is the hardest kicking gun I ever fired. I swear its gotta have more recoil than my buddies .35 whelen. It left the worst bruises I've ever had from just four rounds! I'm glad I will only have to shoot it once a year.

My favorite is a Mossberg 9200 with a cantilevered fully rifled slug barrel shooting 2.75" Remington Copper Solids. Haven't had a deer go 10yds with this combo yet. Two years ago I used my dad's Mossberg 500 with the lightfield slugs to full satisfaction.

Get yourself a pachmeyer recoil reduction buttpad. They are great, I put one on my 695, it was either that or not enjoy shooting the Mossberg. Les
