Last five average 102 yards. A 246 yard antelope messed up my average and jumped it from 65 to 102. 'Course I goofed or would have killed the same antelope we crawled up to when it was within 40 yards.

Like others have said, I prefer close shots from a rest at calm game, but like to have the ability to improvise and stretch that as needed.

Mule deer 258 yards 270WSM
Cow elk ~40 yards muzzle loader
Sitka blacktail 511 yards 270WSM
Columbia Blacktail 140 yards 270WSM
Bull elk ~50 yards muzzle loader

Had stadia lines for the above but since moved to dials. Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

All shots were made with my AT&T rifle, a stainless Weatherby Mark-5 in .300 Roy, factory bbl (terminated with a BOSS), bedded in a modified Bell & Carlson Medalist stock, topped by a LP 4.5-14-40 A/O Mil-Dot with turret. She launches moly-coated 168gr Barnes TSX Boolits .... at 3,400 fps.

Oregon - Cougar 65 yards (she was hunting too ... in stealth mode)
Utah - 6x6 Elk 275 + 300 yards (slow walking)
Oregon - 15 Antelope - 325 yards (going away, at Mach 3)
Oregon - 6x6 Elk 799 yards (standing broadside)
Oregon - 3x3 Whitetail Buck, dink-a-thon candidate 65 yards (standing broadside)

While the average of these may be 305 yards ... the extreme-spread is pretty wide. I believe that the average over my lifetime, is closer to 165 yards.
When considering potential shot distances for hunting in the West, its kinda like Forrest Gump discoursing on the similarities between Life and a box of Chocolates ...

Grizzly at 66.(.338 Win)
Red stag at 568.(.300 Win
Black buck at 330(.300 Win)
Goat at 230.(.300 Win)
Sheep at 100.(.300 Win)
The 5 before that were all under 100 yards with some under 30.
It was kind of a funny year, didn't hunt at home except for guideing the kids.Local hunting stretches out the average range significantly, as does giveing all easy shots to the kids.
