I am only a little familar with this rifle and don't know how it differed from the B-78 High Wall (Have I got that part right?) What year did they stop making these and what calibers were made? I would love to find a good, used 7mm/08 Low Wall---is this likely to be findable? And if I got that lucky, I'd look for a High Wall .280!

dc3,

I could be wrong but I'm relying strictly on memory here: I believe the Low Walls were discontinued about 3-5 years ago. They were made in .22 Hornet, .223 Rem, .243 Win., and .260 Rem. They also made a "Traditional Hunter", in .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and .45 LC. (These had cresent buttplates and tang sights.)

The B-78 or the 1885 High Wall was never chambered in .280, either. The closest you could come would be .270 or 7mm Mag.

The Low Wall was introduced in 1995. Hope this helps...the9.3Guy

The Low Wall was a shorter, lighter version of the 1885 High Wall, which replaced the B-78. They were made from about '95 to 2001. Low Walls were only made in .22 Hornet, .223 Rem., .243 Win. and a few in .260 Rem. as a limited run. They never made them in 7mm-08 so if you want a deer class Low Wall you'll have to seek out a .243 or .260. I have seen exactly one .260 and bought it about 2 months ago. Haven't scoped it yet so don't know how it shoots yet but it is a beautiful little rifle. Good luck finding one because they are S-C-A-R-C-E! The .243's are around but not exactly common either, especially on the used market. There was also a Low Wall "Traditional Hunter" in .357 Mag, .44 Mag and .45 Colt. Winchester is gradually bringing some 1885's back to market but so far the new Low Walls have all been rimfires. BTW, the High Walls were not offered in .280 so you won't find one of those either. Closest you'll come is .270 or 7mm Mag. The new Winchester version is offered in .270 WSM, 7mm WSM & .300 WSM.

Thanks for the info. I'd sure love to luck up on one of those .260's The Winchester High Wall is a nice rifle, but I'm not thrilled with the available calibers. I also see Ruger does not make a .280 or 7mm/08 What is your general feeling about the accuracy of the Winchesters vs. the Rugers?
Thanks
