Took my last vacation day today and took my son, Logan, to the deer lease last night (Sun). Logan is 8 years old and was sitting in the blind with me 2 weeks ago when I took a decent 8-pt buck. He was hooked from that point and has been bugging me to take him so he can shoot a doe.

We went to the shooting range 2 weeks ago and he sighted in his 6mm/250 with some of my 85-Gr. Partition loads. He had trouble with the full-length stock, and I asked here on these forums if anybody had a youth stock they could loan me. Bruzer came through and sent me a plastic ADL stock with some leftover Krylon texture paint on it. After some sanding and a couple coats of Krylon Fusion, the stock cleaned up nicely. Very special thanks to Bruzer for his generosity.

We sat in the blind last night and saw nothing but a doe running at about 200 yards. Went back this morning.....nice clear morning....temp was about 25 degrees. We spotted this doe near the feeder at about 7:45am and Logan decided he wanted to try and take it. I bet I had to tell him about 10 times to calm down and take a deep breath. He was breathing so hard and was so excited.....it was awesome to watch. He finally settled in and wacked it at about 100 yards. Doe fell in its tracks, but needed a follow-up shot. No big deal, and Logan was very excited. I let him tell the processor what he wanted (of course, he wanted all jerky....except we asked for the backstraps whole and whatever's left ground up 80/20). He's still on cloud 9 and is sitting in front of the TV now playing Cabela's Big Game Hunter on the Wii.

Here's a few pics:

Awesome!

Nothing like a kids first deer.

Congrats to Logan and welcome to the tradition Sir.

Great job to you for giving him the opportunity and desire.

Merry Christmas,

Robert

Thanks, guys. Bruzer......He got a little blood on his rifle, and when I said something about it.....he just smiled! I think he's hooked.

247heaven;
Thanks for sharing your son's first deer with us, those are great photos.

Please send along congratulations on the tasty looking doe. cool

I'll give you a tip of the hat for ensuring that the hunt took place and another member of the hunting community got a good start. Well done sir.

All the best to you and yours in 2011.

Regards,
Dwayne

Super-congrats to Logan and Dad. When my young boys kill a deer it tickles me 20x more than when I kill one no matter what the size. PH

It is cool...you only get to kill your first deer once...and you'll never forget it....

Great job and congrats to Logan. It's good to hear from all the Dad's on the Fire hunting and spending quality time with their children. Not to mention passing on the hunting traditions.

If you call being forced to smell his rank farts in the deer blind "quality time"......I guess we spent a lot of quality time. And I got in a few of my own as well. The home-made chili from the night before was working on both of us. But I definitely would not trade the time we shared for anything!

Thats awesome!! I have an 8 year old Logan too who is chomping at the bit. Too bad he has to wait 3 1/2 more years to hunt in his home state of Montana...ridiculous law IMO.
