I just recieved a TC Impact for christmas from the wife. It's been 3-4 years since I last shot a muzzleloader and have nothing left over from my Omega when I had it. I bought some BH209 powder and I am looking at what to try for bullets/sabots to start out with. I will be using this for deer hunting on field edges. Anyone have certain combos that tend to be pretty accurate in there muzzleloaders? in an Impact? thanks for the help

The 300 gr. .429 Hornady XTP with the green Harvester Crush Rib sabot and 100 gr. of either Triple-7 or Blackhorn 209 has worked well for me and others around here. Although I have never killed a der with it at 200 yards, it has done a good job on deer at 150 and we regularly shoot it on the range at 200 with good results if you sight it properly.

Nice thing about that combo is that you can buy both bullets and sabots in bulk relatively cheaply. I refuse to buy those expensive 20-bullet blister packs. Guess I'm a cheap SOB...

Try 110 grs. of Blackhorn 209, 250 gr. Hornady SST-ML or Shockwave in a short black Harvester sabot(H5045SB), CCI 209M primer. This is a load that most T/C's seem to really like including mine.

MY CVA Optima Elite likes:
  • Extreme Elite HP's - I used the 300gr out to 100 yards accurately but they make a 240 and 260gr requiring a thicker Sabot.
  • Harvester 240gr PT Golds are accurate
  • Parker Traditional and Hydro-Cons Sabot bullets are both really accurate in my CVA. I used Harvester CRS for these to work.
  • Parker conicals also work really well with the supplied wads. Because the barrel I was shooting had such tight tolerances they swagged some under sized ones for me
  • Thor .501 250gr conicals
  • Barnes 250gr Spit-fire TMZ
  • Powerbelt 270gr Platinum AeroTip's (if you can find them)

Although not as accurate as the above mentioned projectiles, 460gr No Excuse conicals are accurate to where I can hit an Elk at 100 yards. These had to be swagged under size; prefer no wads and 100grs of Pyrodex instead of BH209(90 - 100grs) or White Hots (2 pellets).

But it really comes down to which projectile, powder and charge your ML likes.

whats the advantage to using the SB(short sabot) as opposed to the regular harvester crush rib sabot for 50 cal H15045BR??

my plan is to pick up some harvester sabots...and some tc shockwave 250gr bullets and then i have two sabots to play with for the same bullet....also on the shockwaves, should i get the yellow superglide sabots or the standard black ones? once again using a TC impact

I use the 250gr. Yellow shockwave superglides or the Hornady SST. Didnt get to shoot a lot before the season and didnt get to Chrony them at all, but my T/C Triumph was extremely accurate with either bullet and 90gr. BH209.

I Never like power belts! They exploded in the field in stream tests this year.Over a 100 guys in the cabalas reviews claim that they see know blood after some deer are hit with them. You can't argue that! Some guys like them, but after trying different bullets,I never looked back.Me,I like hornady 300Gr. XTP's as well.Easy to load accurate as hell and deadly.Power belts aren't even a sabot. If you think they shoot good try em out.Maybe you will love them. What do I know??I've been muzzle loader hunting for appx. 18 years and I still love triple seven.Good luck to you, happy new year.

Hoz,

Try the .50 200 grain shock wave(blue sabot) with 100 grains to 110 grains of powder.

When using Blackhorn 209, some degree of loading resistance is desirable for reliable ignition. The smooth short black Harvester will give you a bit tighter load because of the lack of the ribs on the sabot as compared to the same bullet with the crush rib sabot. All guns will be different and require trying different sabots for proper fit/accuracy in your particular gun. If I were buying the Shockwaves, I'd get the ones with the black sabot as once again, the yellow Super Glides may be too loose for reliable ignition with Blackhorn 209, especially in really cold weather.

powerbelt will kill anything ,if you hit them where you are supposed to.14 deer died with powerbelt 295 hp's this season in our hunting group. we're well over 200 kills with them.
