Other than the fact that the number 1 has it over the encore in looks is there really any reason to pick the number 1 over the encore. I have owned both and to be honest I prefer the encore because I can buy extra barrels and switch between the Pistol/M/L/Rifle setups. To me as least I find the balance of the encore to be more than acceptable. If I didn't have my pump and my ruger M77's I would not feel shorted to just use the encore. I can't remember the last time I fired more than one shot at anything other than small game.

I agree!!!!!! My brother has an Encore and it really shoots. Not the class of a #1, but I doubt the deer even notice!!!! Plus you have all of the other barrel choices.

A No. 1 owner tunes his rifle, works up a load, and goes hunting. An Encore owner is doomed to roam the earth, swapping barrels and loading dies like a kid with a fistful of baseball cards, until he has had every caliber from .17 Rem to .375 H&H, and AI versions of many, and in multiple barrel lengths.

Other than that, no reason. Both are excellent rifles.

I like that line ... it reminded me of the Flying Dutchman!

hey pump
I have been saying this for a long time. Encore cut to fit you, trigger job, any cal you want, friend for life. You can have stainless blued anything. I have 6.5x55 in a shillin barrel and its a tack driver. buy one, I prefer the thumb hole stock. The most inportant thing is to cut the stock to fit you. I believe this is the key to good accuracy. Some say the trigger and ammo is the other half but is you are comfortable with the gun in fit it will shoot better.

Tom why do you think the Ruger #1 has the #1 in it's name? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The main advantage the #1 has over the Encore, is the action type. You don't have to break the action to reload it. Depending on where you are, this having to break the action (such as in double barrel shotguns) can be inconvenient. In fact, the "break angle" is an item of controversy between the lovers of side by side vs under and over guns. Because many times these guns are shot out of blinds and other close quarters.
In addition, there is more movement in the Encore action because of the break, and depending on what you're doing, this can also be a great inconvenience, or the motion can scare game. An additional inconvenience with the break open action, is with hassling heavy barrels, the rifle quickly becomes unwieldy, and front-heavy when open.

It could probably also be argued that the Encore action in inherently weaker than the #1, similar to the break open revolvers that are now almost non-existant. In fact, they're curiosities.

An Encore can shoot many calibers.
A well tuned #1 will shoot one caliber well!

Just to fuel the fire, I own 2 #1's
22-250 and 220 Swift. Sometimes it takes a bit of tinkering to get a new #1 to shoot well
I do not own an Encore.

After reading all of the above, I think it's safe to say that one of these rifles is for the masses, and another for the classes.

Tom,

It does not lay around! IRS sees to that.
