I think I'm a true Rifle Loony. I just got a Burris Fastfire and mounted it on a rifle. It's 24 degrees, light snow and a 25mph wind with gusts to 40. Sounds like a perfect time to sight it in. Kind of a Mickey Mouse adjustment system, but I was able to get it sighted in. Even in those conditions, groups were around 1.25". I'm looking forward to playing with it and seeing how it works. I love it so far.

Try spending all day out in 14 degrees F like I did today just shooting rimfires. Had to chain up to get to the gravel pit (30 miles away) up in the woods too. Ok it wasn't all day, just 5 hours grin. Glad to be in a nice warm house now though:

The 24 degrees wasn't too bad, gusts to 40 suck. I had to put a huge rock on the bottom of the target board just to get it to hold still. The wind died this evening, but right now (9:40PM, it's 4 below).

Sorry, no pics.

Rifle details.... Remington 700 mountain rifle, 7/08, barrel trimmed to 20", sitting in a McMillan edge Sako Hunter stock. With the Burris sight, it weighs 6.2 pounds.

I live on a ranch, and carry a rifle most of the time. When you carry a rifle a lot, what counts is that it's short, light and handy. Up until I got the Burris sight, it wore an old Leupold 2.5x compact scope. Last week I shot a coyote at 200+ yards with the 2.5x scope. I've been running a snare line on foot, and packing this rifle quite a bit. The scope made it hard to grasp around the action. I was going to put a receiver sight on it, but figured I'd give the red dot a try. I'm looking at it more as an alternative to iron sights rather than a scope replacement.

Of course in my pickup I have a Rem 700, .243AI, Pac-Nor barrel, Williams bottom metal, McMillan Rem Varmint stock (edge), Leupold 3.5x10 M1 knobs, loaded with 95gr. Bergers. When I was working up a load for it, it put three shots in .089", one slightly ragged hole. Is that closer to rifle looniness Ingwe?

OK...now we are talkin'...but you didn't mention twist...

A few questions though..

1. Does the rifle have any tape on it? How much, and what color?
2. Do you have any other .243AIs at home?
3. Do you have any barrel blanks, stocks, bottom metal etc. awaiting a donor action for a "build" you haven't decided upon yet?
4. Do you have more than two gun safes full?
5. Do you have any dogs or kids named Rigby or Ruger?
6. And lastly, why arent you up at 6:00 am posting to other rifle loonies on the 'fire?

grin

I'm curious to know how effective you find the 95 grain Berger to be when it hits. I'm loading the same bullet in my 6mm BR and I've thought it could make a helluva groundhog gun if the bullet will splatter them enough.

For the rifle loonies, the rifle is a Remington 700 BDL Varmint Special with an A prefix serial number. It was a 6mm Remington that I had trued and the barrel set back, rechambered and recrowned. It has a Shilen trigger and I'm using a Weaver T-36 on it in Burris Zee rings.

1. No tape at present. I usually use black electrical tape on muzzles. One time I saw a wasp exit the muzzle of a 7x57 Mauser that was left in the pickup. Looked down the bore and found a nest....... this is a bad thing. Since then, I tape muzzles.

2. Of course. Shoots in the low .2's.

3. Of course, doesn't everybody?

4. Only one safe. Can't afford another, spent the money on guns. Stack them in closets and in corners of most rooms.

5. Nope, only one son. Non gun name. Uh oh, my first fail. I hope this doesn't mean we have to have another kid. smile Maybe a new dog......

6. Up at 5:30, checking on animals since it was 8 below!!! Have to go break ice soon, maybe I'll get a shot at a coyote. smile
