Thanks for the posts. I think your Dad would want you to do what you wished with the rifle. I wish my Dad had lived long enough to give me his ...

After seeing the target, I'm thinking she'll still work.

Idaho,
If it where mine, I would cut the barrel down to remove bad area's. I did this on a .308 to 17.5" and it shoots great, 5 in a quarter at 100 yds. and have it reblued. If you what that girl to have it she take it either way, but if it is pretty she will have more pride in a nice blued rifle with some knicked up wood. If you don't I think rust will become a factor over a period of time plus when you are gone she may have different thoughts and feelings than you. Both my girls hunt with me and if she starts to hunt your whole world of hunting will change.

Idaho,

Those pump guns are shooters in my opinion. I bought my Dad's 760 a few years ago and love it. I can see why Pop bought it and used it for his deer hunting. I bought a stainless bolt gun two or three years ago since I couldn't stand hunting in the rain/snow with Dad's gun. Yeah, he did it when he had it but he took such darn good care of it. I wanted to make sure that it would be as good as condition as possible when my kids come around. I don't shoot hot loads in it either, rather about 2 gr. under max and it's a great gun. Good luck with it Idaho and go take some deer with it!

That's the loading range that the 760's seem to prefer - warm, but not hot.

A lot of good advice by the previous postings. I side with those that advocate doing the minimum to get it to shoot consistent 2 MOA or better groups. If you don't know already, you can remove the Rem 760 barrel assembly from the receiver by unscrewing the action tube with a 3/16 dia phillips screwdiver. An exploded view of the 760 from Stevespages: http://stevespages.com/ipb-remington-760.html shows how the parts are related. McPherson's book 'Accurizing The Factory Rifle' describes how. 41Keith suggested that you determine if the barrel is free floating. The action tube cap assembly has an action tube guard that may impinge on the barrel. If it is, the barrel is not free floating and by removing the action tube, you can grind down the guard just enough to relieve any pressure it exerts on the barrel. I am not suggesting that you do any of this but removing the barrel should make it easier to scrub out the barrel from the breech end, re-crown the muzzle, cut the barrel, etc. If you do remove the barrel, you should also take McPhersons advice on the reassembly. Not rocket science but stuff that will prevent you from creating more problems than you may be trying to cure.

41Keith,

I have heard this from more than one pump shooter. I don't know the ins and outs of it. I've had a fellar or two tell me that 2 gr. under max would mean a slower load. So? Deer don't have chronographs or ballistic tables!

No, they surely don't... And one thing I don't want is tough extraction in any hunting rifle, be it a bolt, lever, single-shot or pump. If the bullet travels a 100 fps or so slower than "max" velocities and groups as well or better, that's okay with me. And like you said, the deer will never know the difference!

Dear Idaho,
Very sorry about your loss. I have an old Mauser that I got in the old Kenya Bunduki Outfitters in Nairobi in the 50s. All beat to rat-[bleep] but inside? 90%. An old 375 H&H. Many times I have debated refinishing it, reblueing it but NEVER will now. I have no idea who it belonged to but really? Who cares. It has more "caracter" than most of the people in Oregon. Wish it could talk. What tales it could tell. Stand it up next to the fireplace on a cold night with the firelight causing the stock to change colors. Read Rober Rourks "Use Enough Gun", close your eyes and you can almost hear the Lions roar. NOW! Kick the picture of your beautiful daughter and Dads rifle forward to 2043 or so. You will probably see HER kid, your grandkid in the same position looking at Great Granddads rifle. Leave it the way it is! Hell, it shoots better than most rifles of today anyway. Get yourself a can of LPS #3 and give it a couple of good coats. If it`ll keep guns rust free in Hawaii it should do in Idaho.

Aloha, Mark

Just so everyone knows, Idaho's dad is still among us. He simply passed the rifle on to his son (Idaho), recently.

My Dad never had a good rifle, until I gave him a bunch.

I do lust after his Model 12's though and especially the 16ga. There will be a time when it will be rebuilt and spiffed up,but I'm not looking forward to that day.

Am thinking my kids got it made..................

My 7600 needs 3 rounds downrange before it settles down and shoots under 1". Try about 4 rounds, let it cool and then shoot for groups. It's easy to foul the barrel before the season and hunt with a "dirty" barrel.

Yes everyone, my dad is still with us. He has slowed down considerably over the last few years though. I feel that he knew of his five surviving children, I would be the one to care for his rifle and restore it. He has mentioned many times how badly it needs a new barrel.

I really liked the suggestion of engraving the rifle, am attempting to think of something appropiate, such as "property of (his name), on indefinite loan to his ---; I don't know, "progeny" doesn't quite cut it.

He spends most of his time these days working with these beautys. Besides our eyes could use a little relief after a couple of those previous photos .

Some of these are purchased varieties, but many he has created through cross pollination and hybridizing. Last June I went out to document his many varieties of iris and finished up with over 250 frames on the camera, thank goodness for digital. Many of these are rebloomers, in that they do produce blossoms again in the late summer.

Carbom 12,

I really apreciate the link. I did not realize they carried that information. I have it printed now.
