Why is it so hard to find hornady 416 rigby loads or brass? Cant find it anywhere and have not been able to for some time. Any ideas on where to find some? Thanks.

Because it is hard to make and Hornady sells their's cheaper. High demand and worth the wait. Of course, you can spend 200 bucks instead of 80 for loads all year long (Federal, etc.)

Norma brass is pricier, but usually available online.

my Norma 416 & 470 brass has lasted a long, long time.

As has mine. Midway usually has the Norma stuff. 100 will last a lifetime and then some. My 200 or os will end up as an inheritance to someone.

Is the norma brass better than the hornady? How hot are you guys loading the norma brass? I will buy norma if it is that much better. Thanks.

About a year ago I posted my results after extensive testing of both brands and found no discernible difference. The Norma brass is not worth the extra money and they've priced themselves out of the market practically. There is a reason as to why there is no Hornady brass available, everybody wants it!

I bought my Norma 416 brass before Hornady was marketing theirs --- at the time Norma was the only option available.

My current supply might just last another 20 years, so I'll be unlikely to be able to say which is better.


Having said that, I think you'll be fine with whichever one you can get --- and Norma might be the only one you can actually lay hands on at present.

They are the only ones available right now. I've been waiting for the hornady stuff a long time and I'm not going to wait much longer. If I cant find any here soon I'll be getting the norma.

I wrote Hornady about this, and was told it will be aval. sometime in Jan. So save me 100 rounds please.

I'll keep checking all the usual places for stock until they arrive. Looking forward to getting my hands on 100 or so. Thanks.

What do you guys know about jamison brass? Is it any good for the 416 rigby. A friend has found some but I dont know anything about the quality or how long it lasts. Thanks.

I bot my Rigby before Hornady brass was really available and started using Jamison because I'm too cheap to by Norma. The Jamison brass has been very consistent and high quality. I see no reason to use any other brand.

100 .416 Rigby is a pretty good supply. I bought Norma when nothing else was available.

My Hornady 416 Rigby brass weighs 317-320 grains.
My Norma brass came together in two weights (go figure!): 327-329 grains, and 338-340 grains. The Norma are so wide in the two groups that they need at least one grain of powder difference for equivalent velocities.

I use Jamison brass in my .500 Jeffery, and I load it hot 55,000+ psi. With that said, some of it is on its fourth reload. Jamison is top shelf, very consistant quality.

I've been reloading Hornady .416 Rigby factory ammo. The brass is fine and I've had nil problems.

You guys got any pet loads you would like to share? I'm loading 400 gn hornady's behind a healthy 101 gn of h4831 sc. Seems to be pretty strong. Next time out I'll get some chrono numbers.

Depending on brass, 100 to 102.5 grains of Reloder 17 can push a 350 TSX Barnes at 2800 fps. Those are pretty close to max max loads. Norma cases weighing 340 grains only need 100 grains of R17 to reach 2800 fps on a hot day, while up to 102.5 grains of R-17 are needed with Hornady 317 grain brass.

the TSX, of course, is fully adequate as a first buffalo bullet, and flying at 2800 makes it a great long range eland and impala bullet. Things will only get better in the early Spring when the new blue-tipped TTSX 350 grain Barnes in .416 will be unveiled.

At 2800 fps one might see some of the 'explosive' effect of mini-petal projectiles expanding the main wound channel, along with deep, straight penetration of the main core. And if the velocity is low enough to preserve the petals, then a traditional mushroom is still good.

AR2209 (AKA Hodgdon H414/H4350) 98 Grains behind 410 Bertram SP 2450fps

AR2209 90Grains behind 450Grain Woodleigh RNSP 2250fps

The 450 hit 2 inches lower at 50mts all the rest were in the same group.
With the 450 grain pills I am working without reloading data but I can still go higher in velocity going by the case's and extraction but why bother.
