I've killed 2 whitetails with the .264 WM
Both died on the spot and didnt take another step, both were shot with 140 grain Remington Coreloks.

Smoked a couple with the WW 140gr factory load. Drilled one with a handload pushing a 120 Nosler BT. Bang flop on all three.
It is a fine cartridge.

The Nosler 120 gr BT with Rel 25 is my favorite deer load in my 264 Win Mag
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I built mine in 1973..since have killed a pile of deer and speed goats with it...I think nowdays however the smaller 6.5 calibers are much more efficient from the reloading standpoint and the newer bullets make them even more deadly.... plus being able to carry around a lighter rifle in a short action is a big +.....Still like it though, lots of power if needed!!!

That's my recollection as well.

A Barnes 140gr XLC in front of stout load of 7828 is real hard on mulies. Will be trying the 130gr TSX next year or 2.

had one for years and only sold it wen i got my 257 roy. I shot the 125 NP over 4831 and 870. it was never wanting for much as it dropped deer from muzzle to 485 yds with plenty of authority. the loonie in me sold it as i have never been one to have much overlap in my huntign guns and space in the safe was short.
very neat round

Dober DOBER/MULE- thanks for that . that is what i meant with my post. i actually got one ( very small one) with my 6.5-284 this year, and my nephew got one with a .264 too . mallard- my guess of h4831 or h870 for that time, was close too. thanks all and good hunting. roninflag

ronin based on what i knew of the .264 when i had it, H4831 and h870 were THE powders to run. i had just got into the Reloader line of powders for my big guns when i sold my .264 but i seem to recall playing just a tiny bit with R19 or R22, not sure now.

Any starting, any medium, any max handload, or any factory 264 Win Mag ammo, should take care of any deer; world record or otherwise.

It isn't 'too much', but it's 'more than necessary'.
That about sums it up for me. I've never owned one, but known people who used them quite a bit. We all killed our deer, regardless of what we were using. My longest shot was with a .30/06, of all things.

did he use a factory super X, or a handload with a case full of H4831 or H870?? As I remember from reading the article way back when, he used a 125 gr Nosler partition with 67/H4831 from a Sako rifle and his hunting buddy was using a .270 Weatherby.

I've got the story in an old hardback collection of Outdoor Life classics. I'll read it tonite and report back.

Burris used 66.5 grains of 4831 (doesnt say whether it was IMR or H) and a 125 gr. Nosler. He doesnt specify but we can probably assume Partition.
The rifle was a Sako with a 3X9 Leupold. He estimated the range at about 300 yards. Bang - flop.
