I recently purchased a boat for the lakes in the region and have thought about heading down to the gulf too. I'd like a portable marine radio and figured this was the place for opinions. I am not looking for the cheap ones, but one that will work when needed. I have some experience in the gulf, but never on my boat - always family or friends. If anyone has any experieince or suggestions, please let me know.

ICOM, Kenwood, Motorolla, Furuno would all be good choices, IMO.

For what sounds like just coastal or river use I would favor a cell phone first. Also carry a hand held VHF like you mention.
I have an old Standard Horizon that worked for years. It's dedicated battery is discharged. There must be a charger around here somewhere. The other one here is an Icom with aa batteries. Over the counter batteries are better.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

I can see the advantages of a handheld unit but a dedicted console mounted radio (25 watt) with an 8' antenna will reach way out there. In good conditions I had no problems at 25 miles even on a low power setting. I can't recall exactly which brand is was (I'm thinkin' it was a Standard Horizon) and wasn't terribly expensive ~ $125.00 - it worked just fine for 3 or 4 years on my boat till I sold it.
A cell phone as secondary back-up is always a good idea.

Yea, I carry a cell phone, but radios are required in some waters.
