Jim Thorpe hands down. Track & Field, Baseball, Football, but you also have to throw in the name of Jesse Owens inlight of what he accomplished at the German Olympics during the 1930's going into Berlin and putting Adolph Hitler's Super Race to shame.

Bo Jackson. You said greatest athlete. Anyone who never got a chance to see him perform in person missed a most incredible exhibition of athleticism, be it on the gridiron or the diamond.

All facts - but you did not state one important one. WG was BIG money to all of hockey and the largely unspoken rule in the league was that opponents were to lay off him physically, do not check him too hard and do not paste him to the boards. Nor did he playe very physically. All for fear that he would be injured and/or his skils - and image - diminished. That would heave meant lost $$ to all. The above played no small role in his scoring records. To be an all-around great, you have to do it all - and on a level field (ice). How was his defense?

Cast another vote for Bo.
Heisman Trophy winner, and the only player to ever be both an MLB All-Star and NFL All-Pro.

This is so far out in left field it's completely out of sight. Did you ever play hockey? Ask anyone who ever played this sport & see if this kind of 'fix' could ever be accomplished. We're not talking WWE here, this is a real sport. Unbelievable ...

Without question, the world's greatest athlete ever was John "Long John" Daly. Can anyone ever forget his playoff victory over Costantino Rocca in the 1995 Open Championship?

If we want to speculate on what a person could have done in other sports as well as the one for which he is best known, I think that Wilt Chamberlain would be worthy of mention. If I remember correctly, he did go into volleyball after basketball. Just to take the burden off everyone to mention it, we could also include his legendary bedroom pole vaulting exploits.

Where is the 'head shake' icon. This is so far out in left field it's completely out of sight. Did you ever play hockey? [Yes !] Ask anyone who ever played this sport [Have - many times] & see if this kind of 'fix' could ever be accomplished. [Not seen or conducted as a "fix" - just leaning a certain way] We're not talking WWE here, this is a real sport. Unbelievable ... Maybe try shaking your head while watching some old match film - no need to take my word or that of any of the many hockey aficionados who understand this full well. Nobody said it was the WWE and, of course it is a great game and league. But, the action does not lie.

No doubt if talking an animal, Secretariat. A-Jim take a look at Zenyatta on youtube. She won 19 out of 20 races & the loss in #20 was jockey error. I haven't seen if she has raced since that loss but she is an outstanding mare & so fun to watch run. She always lets the field lead & then comes from the backfield to win ... very cool.

Jim Thorpe won the decathalon and pentatholon back to back, I don't think it has been done before or since. Baseball, football and track and field pretty much covers what it takes to be an all around athlete. After he lost his Olympic Gold medals and they were awarded to the second place finisher, (IIRC a Swede) the guy would not accept them, he said Jim Thorpe is the greatest athlete in the world. His medals were finally returned to his family a few years ago.
