There are lots of hunters who like to use rifles with trajectory similar to thrown rocks. They don't need or want huge variable power scopes with objective lenses the size of Buick headlites. Anybody know who makes a good 2 1/2 or 3 x sraight tube scope that can be had for a reasonable price?

Weaver makes a very nice 2.5 x 20 for about $100. Burris makes a nice 4 x 20 for about $160.

I have a Simmons mounted on a .338-06, works well so far after maybe 150 rounds or so...

Search ebay weekly and hold out for a vintage Leupold 3x. They will still rebuild one to like new for you under the lifetime warranty program.

Rumor has it that Sitka Deer has a bucket full of them in his basement. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> therefore you now know why they getting harder to find.

The most common ones I see are the old Weaver K3s. Several years ago I bought one and sent it in to Weaver Scope Repair to have it reconditioned and get the reticle changed to a four plex. Put it on a 30-30 and have been happy with it ever since.

Weaver 2.5 K gloss - just received one from Natchez - $105. Looks like a great scope - plan to buy more of same. About half a pound, 20 mm objective, generous eye relief, very quick to eye. Very crisp edge to edge.

Leupold still makes their 2.5x, now called the Ultralite, or some such title. Weighs about 6.5 oz. No power ring, lots of eye relief, straight tube, you ought to be able to get right down there with the irons.

Yeah, L's 2.5 is a really nice scope. I just received 2 Weaver K 2.5's which I put on older low recoil guns. If I was going to a hard kicker, I'd put a Leupold on it.

It's amazing how relaxingly simple litlle, fixed power scopes are - they truly become "sights" and are quick as lightning.

I figured out why I like the little scopes so much... It's that 20 mm objective. Bigger objective bells just remind me I'm carrying something delicate. The little ones are easier to forget about.

And... this morning I was chuck hunting across a limestone quarry lake to an island that is infested with chucks. I had a tough time getting on the chucks quick enough, even at 6x. But, trying to shoot a fixed Harriis bipod off the sloping truck hood is a disaster anyway. Next time I'll bring sandbags...

My Ruger TGVT 223 wears an older B&L 6-24 with a sunshade. It is the longest scope I have ever or will ever own. And when cranked to 24x the image darkens so much as to almost be useless. Backed off a quarter turn and it's ok. Makes my V16 Classics look better all the time!

I bought a Weaver K3-C with a Duplex reticle off of E-bay about 6 months ago. I figure the scope is from around 1970 or so because Weaver came out with a plex reticle around '68. Most of my hunting has been done with a 2X7 set on 3X. I find that a 3X is not too much up close like a 4X can be, yet it's a little nicer than a 2.5X.
Leupold should make a limited run of the M8 in 3X. They'ed sell out in a heartbeat. Plenty of power for most and lightweight to boot.

We're working on them to do just that. There is some hope they may come through... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

I always figgered that the 3x21s were only half as good as the 6x42s . . . (grin).

If less is more, they're twice as good.

I once traded a 6x42 straight across for a 3X -- mostly just to watch Art twitch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> (and because I wanted it...) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

What a hoot... I have an "L" 6x42 without a home at the moment... it was between that and a 3x9 Burris Bal Plex on a new Savage 7mm mag. After much (too much) deliberation... the Bal Plex won. After all if I want to cream an occasional chuck or coyote with the 7mm the Bal Plex will come in handy. I think it was Metcalf that did an article recently about using the Bal Plex as an MOA reference that really intrigued me.

Anyway, I had already put low mag scopes on most of my big game rifles... and somehow I ended up with a free 6x42... go figure...

Two of my most favored scopes are the long tube Leupold M8-4X and the Weaver K2.5-1. I buy those whenever I see them go for anything close to a bargain.

I also like the Leupold M8-3X but muledeer, 9.3 guy and Sitka deer have much to good of noses to let one of those go by at much of a bargain. Therefore I look for Weaver K3-1 scopes also. Muledeer once mentioned that there are only 300 or so people who realize the value of the 3 power scope but somewhere along the line it seems they all got pretty much educated to the finer points of them. Three power scopes are the hardest fixed power scope for me to find. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
