Yeah, but which caliber would you rather have inscribed on the side of an M-70? Considering the history of cartridges and the Model 70, I'd have to say .270 Winchester. Between Ottmar and Biesen, I have the .270 covered. Awesome! My first M70 is probably going to be a .308 Win. Not as cool a choice as the .270, but not bad, either.
What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

[When reaming, did you have it throated for the longer COAL?? [/quote]
I did nothing to the throat, this is an otherwise factory barrel and it had a lot of freebore - as a matter of fact it is difficult to get most bullets to even reach the lands on this barrel.

I dug out an old .284 article by Spomer. He says a simple rechamber to .284 from 7mm-08 is doable. Anyone know for sure? Winchester is making the Extreme Weather in 7mm-08.... How cool would an EW in .284 Winchester be? I have my Marlin XS-7 7-08 at the 'smith right now having the chamber re-cut to a 284Win. The COAL is right at 2.80 and they feed slick as snot out of the magazine. For a grand total of about $475 I'll have a 6.5pound 284. That is a darn good idea!

Build it and you will love it. That spacer will pop out easily and you have a super fine .284. I tend to be partial to that case. It's enough out of the box to intrigue me. Had one in a model 100, there is a Browning Micro Medallion in my rack now and a 30-284 Ruger#3. My favorite powder for that case - H4350. That E W would be one sweet rig. Send us pictures of the build.

Have built 3 of them on the older controlled feed classic actions but popped out the mag spacer, (its just spot welded in and can be removed with the twist of a screw driver), cut down the bolt stop, ejector blade and they fed impeccably without any other alteration. Probably the perfect action for a 284 based rig. Dont know if the new Winchesters use the same mag box/ geometry but cant imnagine it would be different.
If you want good quality hay then expect to pay a fair price, if you want to buy hay that has already been thru the horse, well that comes a little cheaper.

I have most of the 7's, but no .284's. I have been saving for one in a Sav 99 or Win 88, but the prices go up faster than I can save. I do have a Howa SS/SYN in 7mmWSM.

The thought of a .284 Win on a M70 crossed my mind a while back (already have a 6.5x284 on a SC M70 SA). In the end I went with a 7mm WSM. Between it and several .280 Remmy's, I'm comfortable with my 7mm (.284) holdings. YMMV
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.
