Fact is, Ive never owned or killed a head of game with either of them... but in true Campfire tradition, I think that gives me the right to expound at length on their virtues/weaknesses....

Were a guy to wring the distance out on a windy day the 264 would get the nod, that said, I have tipped elk over at 400 yds with a 100 gr tsx out of a Roy.....drops em like a gun 10x its senior. The Roy is the ticket for most cases on most days
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

I had this same delemna when I built my first magnum. Pouring over the external ballistic charts lead me to the 264. Down range energy won out.

I'd think a .270 Roy would split the difference nicely. I owned and hunted with one for 20 years and can attest to its game-killing prowess.
It freakin' hammers critters dead...even real big critters.
If you want a bit less, the 257 Roy is a sexy as it gets and nearly as effective.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

If you want a bit less, the 257 Roy is a sexy as it gets and nearly as effective. I agree. However, may I suggest the 270 WSM. Several years ago I was looking for a longer range rifle for deer. I was considering a 264 Win. Mag and the 257 Roy. I couldn't find a rifle that was affordable to me in those calibers so "settled" for a used 270 WSM that I got a good deal on. I can get 257 Roy ballistics with the 110 gr Barnes TTSX at 3600 fps. I can get very close to the 270 Roy with 130 gr at 3300 fps. I can match the 264 Win Mag with 140 gr bullets at 3100 fps. 270 WSM factory ammo can also be found easier with more varied bullet types and weights than either the 264 or 257 Roy. The 257 Roy Is sexy and I like it. I wouldn't get a 264 Win mag. I like the 270 WSM or Roy...especially if elk is on the menu (heavier bullets). Dan

No truer words were ever spoken on here Ingwe.. Actually, even tho I have never owned either, I have shot both enough to know, that in the real world... a better choice for me at least, would be the 257 Roberts, vs the 6.5 x 57 ( x 55) argument. Don't need the extra kaboom and excessive barrel wear. Heck, I'd just get a 270 or 280 then.. however, I wish the O.P. the best of luck with whatever he ends up with.
