I have an old family scoremaster in fairly good condition. from what i can gather through other websites and other posts, the manufacture date is October, 1957, given the letter stamping on the side and my family history (this was my uncle's gun, who would have come to shooting age around 1957. the other option was 1935, substantially before he was born).
My issue is this: most postings suggest that there were no serial numbers stamped into these guns. Tonight, however, while cleaning it, i noticed a faint 5-digit number stamped into the left side of the barrel, near where the forearm ends. can anyone tell me what this is? if the conventional wisdom regarding serial numbers is incorrect, what information about the gun can i glean from this number?

I'd type on over to RimfireCentral.com and pose your question on the Remington forum. I am not certain, but I think some of the early years production rifles may have had serial numbers. However, that wouldn't include a '57 model.
Either grandparem or John G. will have some info for you.

Most Remington rifles have a 2 digit assembly date code stamped on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver and just above the stock. I have an old Remington 512, the tubular magazine version of your 511, with an assembly code of XF, December 1959. This rifle has a number stamped on the barrel, just ahead of the front of the stock, on the left side, but it can't be serial number because it is a 4-digit number very near the end of the production run that totaled over 393,000 rifles. My rifle doesn't have a serial number on it, at least that I can see.

Interesting. The serial numbered early rifles did indeed have serial numbers at 6 o'clock in front of the forend but yours is on the side.
Is your rifle receiver grooved for a scope? 57 vintage should be. Pics would help. Maybe the serial was added for some odd reason.

Not grooved for tip-off scope mounts.
Oops, back up, the assembly code is actually XJ, 12/40, not XF, 12/59.
The number stamped on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the forearm, is 8211.

Mine is grooved for a scope, and i suspect that the current scope is the original that came with the gun. side stamp, where i got manufacture date, was "OD 27".
Not that it probably makes a difference, but this gun probably came from the family's general store, which provided a variety of farming, household, clothing, foodstuff, and other gear at the time.
number on the side is 49xxx

Yes, I knew that, which is why I posted the assembly code for my 512 as XJ, December 1940 (12/40) and OD, July 1957 (07/57), for Bovinany's 511.
Post your assembly codes and I'll post when they were assembled for you. I thought that the 580/581/582 series succeeded the 510/511/512 series in 1967.
