It's because we baby our gear <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> --or because most of us use a porter. I have a porter--don't ask for any of her pics .
It could be a way to limit French whining.

WOW ... we should consider ourselves lucky .... we get lifetime warrantys while they are only allowed a 10 year warranty in Europe. European competition laws consider an unconditional Lifetime Warranty as an "unethical sales gimmick" of the ground that the involved cost (for repair or replacement) is obviously hidden in the price. So in fact the customer is screwed by the manufacturers and is screwing himself because he is paying a hidden "insurance fee". Regards RD

So is the glass that much cheaper in Europe? Prices here and there - and somewhere else - are not quite comparable due to differing taxes, import fines, overhead factors, rebates, etc. In Old Europe there is no Lifetime Warranty at all, neither on US-products - except if we (as the end consumers) buy directly from this great country of yours - nor on other stuff. Talking optics, I prefer an excellent product (though w/out warranty - my Zeiss scopes and binos of 1930 vintage are still operational), compared to so-so stuff with "life long" warranty. RD

Roe Deer, It cracks me up how tight the German's can be. Every glass in German restaurants has it's capacity i.e. ,3 or ,6 liter etched in the side. I noticed more than a few holding up their glasses up to make sure the barkeep filled all the way to the line. Over here for whatever reason we demand top-notch service, Leupold, Swarovski and Kimber's service is so good it's almost unbelieveable. Even at Walmart (our low price store) will take back stuff if it breaks and you still have a receipt. Although I must admit the service at Frankonia Jagd and Daimler-Chrysler wasn't too bad. I miss Germany I hope I get to go back soon.............DJ
Remember this is all supposed to be for fun.......................

It is interesting to see how little effect intended legislation has on outcomes. Utimately free market forces determine prices, eh Roe? Here is a helpful link for international price comparison: currency converter Roe Deer do you know if Swarovski has the same dealer restrictions in Europe that they have in the US? Here the dealers are required to mark up a minimum of 10%. Does the Union regard that as unethical also? Sorry about the hijack, Norwegian, I enjoyed the reviews and and was glad get access to them. Birders have an edge on hunters for the most part on the research side it seems, but guys like Barsness has narrowed that gap.

dj - this year I have to do a lot of hunting in Estonia, Poland, Austria, Spain and the rest of Europe but I for sure do miss the Missouri breaks and Windy Wyoming as badly as you do miss Germany...
Tomk - normally, dealers in Germany are very restricted by manufacturers - and you said it already: Ultimately free market forces determine prices... BTW a 8x42 Zeiss Victory FL here is ca. 1,400.00 EUR which converts to 1,792.27 USD according to the curreny converter(although you can't quite compare these prices, as you know). Regards RD
