Today I saw on Hodgdon's website that they will be offering their Superformance powder perhaps as early as this month (mid Jan 2011), and I am wondering if any of our writers have been able to test it yet?

I have seen the data that Hornady lists on their website showing some significant increases in MV in some standard and short mag calibers with this powder (some examples range from 100 to 200 fps gain). ???

I really would like to know what your findings have been, if you've had a chance to try it for yourselves.

Thanks.

As we've discussed in several earlier threads - and which I confirmed in person at SHOT - both powders show added performance in some cartridges but not in others. Hodgdon's advice is that if you don't see either powder listed in their published data for your cartridges, don't use it.

They are NOT intended as general-purpose powders, but as niche propellants for a few explicit uses. Their list of tested cartridges may expand as time permits, but for now, the list is short. Save your money until you see your cartridge listed.

Spot on..........RL-17 isn't the wonder powder for all cartridges either...It's specific like I assume the Superformance is.

Wait for the data..

Just an opinion...

And that holds true for any just about powder, actually.

Depends in which caliber...Blue Dot is for sissies in the 45-70 yet there isn't a powder around yet, that matches RL-7 and AA-2230 for pressure/velocity.

Hey, shootist didn't say "load to full power." He just said "load everything from Hornet to 340 Weatherby." And you CAN.

However, since he and I both wrote that as a bit of humor, let's not get into the Blue Dot tirade again, shall we?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm waiting to see other cartridges added to the very short list for now, and admit that I am intrigued by the data thus far.

Thanks again.

.....................My 300 WSM patiently awaits this new Hodgdon Superperformance powder. For now though, a limited amount of cartridges listed by Hodgdon.

The Hodgdon #s for the 300 WSM are very intriguing and impressive. Hope the accuracy can match.

bigsqueeze, FYI - cabelas is showing Superformance powder in the 2011 Shooting catalog - 1 # size.

I was at the Ft Worth cabelas the other day and noticed hornady's superformance loading in many dif calibers (270, 30-06, 7mm mag, 300 mag, 300 WSM, 338 Win Mag, 338 RCM, ... etc.). To me this is promising and I hope that load data for the additional cartridges becomes available soon. smile

..........Thanks..... My dealer here has some on order. I`ll wait until he gets some.

Hornady must have recently added the 300 WSM to their Superformance ammo line.

bigsqueeze,

Check that. I mis-typed above, WSM was not in superformance. It was 300 RCM. My mistake.

Here is a link to Hornady's site showing all calibers currently loaded in Superformance ammo. Its pretty extensive.

http://www.hornady.com/store/searchammo.php?mode=search&main_cat=249&categoryid[0]=256&categoryid[1]=&categoryid[2]=1144&page=1

You have to paste the whole thing into your browser - for some reason this site is cutting it short.

...............Went over to the Hornady site after I read your last post and didn`t see any 300 WSM Superformance ammo listed. I figured that you meant to type 300 RCM instead.

While there, I did watch that 6 minute video with Dave Emery talking about the Superformance ammo and showing Boddington on the range chrony`n some 30-06 Superformance.

For my 300 WSM, the Hodgdon Superperformance powder will have to do...... grin
