Hey guys, could use a little help. I looked at a 99G .250-3000 today. Serial number #3332XX. Overall good condition, correct barrel markings, serial number of F/E matched the receiver. Here's my questions. The stock was a PG w/ the black P/G cap but the butt plate was a rifle butt plate like you would see on a A.

No extra holes in the wood or the steel. I am just not sure about the rifle butt plate. Couldn't take it off to see if there was a serial # stamped on it. Could the rifle butt plate be ordered at an additional charge on a 99G? I like the gun and price seemed in the ball park. Reciever was about 80% with wear on the bottom. Wood was probably refinished at some point in time. barrel blue and rifling were very good. Throw some ball park dollar amounts that you think would be good.

If you mean a crescent butt plate, then that wasn't an option. Normal 99G buttplate was a shotgun style just like on the EG's or R's.

Calhoun, Loggah,
Thanks for the insight. I do mean a cresent butt plate like that of an A. Loggah I thought someone on the board may have seen this configuration before. Just not sure and without being able to remove the butt plate I didn't want to take to big of a gamble. Any thoughts of value?

Well,i would want to check under the buttplate and make sure the numbers match,i think my buttstock is a bit longer then normal so these could have been special order guns. i guess its up to you in what you want to pay. i will go check on mine in a bit and get back to you. Don

Looking under the buttplate and checking the numbers on plate and stock would make a huge difference in what I would pay. There's two possibilities: it is special order and was shipped that way vs. someone has swapped the stock. The odds are not evenly split wink

My serial number to my rifle is 368737, it would have been a special order buttstock no matter where it came from. i'm pretty sure its a special order rifle.

Could you please share a picture? It would be a tight pistol grip with checkering and a crescent but? Also wondering the length of pull?
Thanks Chris

Chris, when the wife gets home from work i might be able to get her to take a picture eek grin, the length of pull is the same as my other rifles from that era a bit over 13" but because of the crescents curve the heal and the toe are longer. Don

There was a G in 250 with a crescent buttplate for sale for a short time on GB... I asked the owner to verify the numbers matched and they did not, he took down the listing.

The OP list this gun as appearing refinished, it could just as easily be a replacement stock made by a gunsmith.

I'd be pretty hesitant... and would make sure the numbers matching was the right style for the period and that the end grain of the wood does not look freshly cut or finished...I don't doubt that some exist, I'd just be awfully leery. As Boltman says, the odds are not evenly split...

I have 20/26 with a cresent, rifle-style, butt plate. Factory ordered that way with a shorter, 12", LOP for a short man in Jackson, WY. Lettered per Mr. Clark.

I have a Winchester M1873 .44/40 SRC with a rifle butt. Winchester typically does not serial number their stocks so taking the buttstock off and the buttplate off told me nothing. Even though the odds were against me, I bought it anyway. Imagine my immense pleasure when the word came back from Cody stating it was shipped with a rifle stock smile

Yes, out of over 700,000 M1873's, they did a few, but again, the odds are against it! I've seen quite a few M1873's where someone has put a rifle stock on a carbine (or a carbine stock on a rifle) and that's what I thought was probably the case with this one. I've been to Vegas a couple times and never gambled a nickel wink

Big odds against it, especially if it looks refinished. And if it's refinished, the value has been hurt a lot anyway.

Without checking the numbers, I'd say 95% it's not right.

Don, just went through all of my Fest pics from Jed, didn't see anything with crescent buttplate and pistol grip that's not an 1899 (A2, BC, etc).

All,
Thanks for your input. For what the bottom dollar on the rifle was I have held up. I liked it a lot and I like that is was .250-3000. Just not certain I want to pay that much with the risk of it being a non-original stock. Foxnut

foxnut,Why wont the seller take the buttplate off and check the numbers? also double check the serial number 3's and 8's look a lot alike and it could be close to my serial number rifle. Don
