Hello,
I need some help from more knowledgeable folks. I have a new Remington 798 stock. My large ring Mauser action fits perfect. I want to buy and have installed a new non-magnum barrel, probably 7x57. I do not want to do a lot of inletting. Can anyone please tell me the contour or dimensions of the original 798 non-magnum barrels? I want as close as possible as a drop-in fit.

The newer m798 rifles have a slightly smaller contour than the older Mark-X rifles.

From what I can tell, the m798s are about a no. 2 contour barrel in standard calibers.
