but some of the options have me a little confused (not an uncommon occurance). Specifically:
1. cheekpiece. None? Integral? Saddle? Thumbwheel?
2. butt: Two way vertical adjust? Three way adjust? Spacer?
3. pillars?
I have zero experience with tactical stocks, but I want to try something new. But it's a fairly sizeable investment, when you add all the options, and I don't want to screw it up. It's probably going on a Remington SPS-V in .223, which might just get the barrel chopped to 22-23" (until I burn it up and can throw a fast-twist SS tube on it). Probably mostly get shot off a bench, or prone at sage rats and the like, of possibly (but not very likely) for calling coyotes.

Thanks, all.

Personally I go no cheeckpiece, standard recoil pad (non-adjustable and no spacers) and no pillars. Least expensive and most durable. McMillan has an option page where you can see pictures of the options in case that helps.

Same with 1" decelerator, except I'd do pillars. If you decide to have a heavier-duty pillar job later, they can just be drilled out. And you can always add a Karsten's cheekpiece if you decide you need one.

And the A5 is just screaming for one of the camo's......dark, forest, desert....etc.

Thanks, just had a look. Seems like maybe the spacer system might not be a bad idea, as I have a son who I hope will be shooting with me soon, but LOP might be an issue.

Actually, .257, I was thinking of Tom264's orange/black/grey McSwirley!

Or maybe another black/white McSwirley.

The A-4 is a better stock.

I kinda went all out when I got my A5, and went with the thumbwheel cheek, spacers, and pillars. I have no regrets, at all. The cheekpiece can be adjusted to fit different shooters, as can the spacers, and the pillars kinda made sense. Also, for bi-pod work, I would get the front rail as well, as it is much more secure than a sling swivel.

Even taking into account that the thing will most likeley be shot off a bipod.
If you ever get to serious bench work ,I like a flat forend on a stock and a rest that set up for it.
You can run either off a bipod but the flat forend will trump the round crap every time off of a decent front rest.

Another question I forgot above is fill... is a standard fill going to be nose heavy?

From a bench, or prone, it won't matter to much anyway.

I like mine fixed comb and butt, but that's a personal choice.

I favor 40mm glass, so it all works well.

With a barrel that long, you will be nose-heavy. I prefer standard fill for the overall weight, but a sniper-filled stock will be more balanced

I have at least 5 As of various make, but they are not my favorites for a hunting rifle. For hunting rifles I like HTGs but do not need the adjustable cheek piece that everyone swears you need with the HTG. If I just feel the need for a vert grip stock I am thinking I am gonna stick with A-3s from here on out. I just am not a fan of the butt hooks.

I'd brush the adj comb & butt and include the spacers. Std fill if good.

I'd lean toward the spacers and sniper fill.

A-5's suck off the bench for prairie dogs. You can't adjust for elevation by sliding the gun fore and aft with the butt hook. I peddled a couple I had that served part time duty for dogs, and replaced them with the Marksman, which has the identical forend as the A-5, with a tapered butt.

Vertical Grip Tactical Style
Available Models:
#2092 Remington 700 BDL, Heavy Barrel, Short Action

This is an excellant stock off the bench and of a pod.
For a round forend I like the GP.
