I have a need for a scope for a .222 remington that I shoot presently shoot woodchucks and paper with, however I am invited coyote hunting with some people. The gun has no scope on it at this time and I'm wondering what scope you guys would use for a gun that might get used for close range deer and barreling in coyotes yet still be good for shooting turkeys and woodchucks in the neck and also punching paper at 250 yards. I have a 3-9 scope on my other .222 so i'm thinking that maybe I should go with more power like a 4-12 or 3.5-10.

I have a 3.5-10 on mine and like it, but it certainly isn't too much scope when the targets get prairie-dog sized, or the distances get over 200. I would get the 3.5 to ten at the very least. You can always crank it down when you're stalking with it.

A good quality 4-12x40 or a 4.5-14x42 or 44 would seem to be a good fit on a 222.

I think JO'C got it right in 1970 when he wrote, on page 291 of The Hunting Rifle, "... the 222 is about a 225-yard varmint cartridge and a good 6x scope is about a 225-yard varmint scope.".

BACK on topic..... My Sako 222 has been happily wearing a Leopold 4.5-14x40 gloss and I have found it ideal for this rifle. Been on there a long time. If your rifle finish is matte or SS and you want a good value on a budget the Vortex scopes are terrific for the money. Actually, pretty good period regardless of price point. A 4-12x40 Vortex or even the newish Redfeilds would be a good topper there.

As many here have suggested, somethi9ing in the 4-12, 4-16 etc. range is ideal for a 222.

I have a 3-9 Burris on my BDL sporter Remington and the previous BDL sporter wore a 3-9 for fur and feathers to 200 yards or so; I don't think a 6 power is out of line.

I think paper killers need more power and better glass; my Sako 222 Vixen HB wears a Leupold M8 12X and puts five together with boring regularity. More X's don't hurt when wind and 22 holes are sought.

My 660 doesn't have a scope on it, but shortly after I got it in 1971, it had a Weaver K6 on it. The Savage 24V has an old Japanese Simmons 2-7x32 #1040 on it. Good enought Jack, good enough for me. Besides, I was a loyal Jack O'C reader, how could I choose counter to Jack's recommendations?

Yeah, a 50 mm objective lens looks silly on about any hunting rifle, but is REALLY out of place on a 222.

right now i'm thinking about getting a 2.5 -10 or 3.5-10. If I need more power I will just take the 4-12 vortex viper off of the 25-06.
