Hey guys, got a quick question for y'all. I just got a Zeiss 3x9x40 Conquest for my 700 ADL 30-06. I don't know a whole lot about bases and rings. (I have the same scope that my dad mounted on it when he bought me the gun when I was about 12 yrs old.) Anyway I am a little confused about where to start and what is best for my rifle. As far as bases go do I go with single piece, picatinny style or 2 piece. If I go with that then do I get a weaver style mounts, dovetail...etc. As far as ring mounts how do I determine what size to get and what are some good quality rings to consider? I will probably try and put Butler flip up caps on just because the scope caps that can with scope for lack of a better word...suck. Any suggestions would be helpful. I saw that Zeiss makes a 2 piece base and ring set but would like to see what y'all thought, before I started buying anything b/c I don't want to buy the stuff and then end up not getting it right the first time.

Talley Lightweights.
ETA: You can buy them right here on the fire. They'll take care of the rings and the bases in one shot and they're about as solid a mounting system as you're going to find.

Look at warne maxima bases and rings. They are excellent.Great price too.

Just stay away from the leupold adjustable mount and rings. I don't care how tight you adjust them they will come loose over time and screw things up. Had that happen on three different rifles( magnums) so I went to weaver style rings and bases, no problems since.I like the one piece bases myself. You couldn't of made a better choice in the scope, zeiss 3-9x40 is hard to beat and better then most.

Just looked at the Warne maxima bases and rings. They look like they are very high quality too. I went to Warne's website which gave me good bit of info as well. These look really good, I guess it is a tie between the Warne and the Talley right now.
One quick question. So the general idea when mounting a scope is to have the scope as close to the barrel as possible while still maintaining a full field of view when you throw the gun up to your shoulder (w/o having to make adjustments like squeezing your cheek into the stock or moving your head around to obtain a full site picture, right).

On a M700, a 3-9x40 Conquest is limited as to how low it can go not by the objective, but by the ocular (eyepiece) clearing the bolt.
(Well... this is true with Butler Creek flipups on it at least...)
At any rate, Talley LW "low" will position that scope about as low as is practical and have the multiple advantages of being cheap, extremely light, retard-strong, and extremely simple. In short, they are wonderful. I've switched all my hunting rifles to them and have had zero drama from them.
I think you'll love that scope. I've got two of them and I'm contemplating a third. They are the best I've tried on a long-action M700.
Just FYI, if you are so inclined the turret they come with is a brilliant little design and will work fine as a low-profile hunting turret, to get you out to 600-750 yards (depending on cartridge) in one rotation.

Talley LW's: simple and solid. Low's will work with 40mm objective.

I have no quarrels with Talleys. The Warne mounts work just fine with my Zeiss Conquests.

In all fairness, while I'm partial to Talley's, the Warnes and DNZ's are excellent as well. The DNZ setup is about as easy as it gets and very solid.
