Just traded into an AR. It's a Doublestar lower and DPMS upper (flattop, heavy ss barrel 1-9 twist). It has an 8lb trigger pull, which is a bit heavy for me. I intend the rifle for ground squirrel plinking. Is there an easy homebrew "trigger job" or should I just replace it with a Timney or similar? It's not my first AR, but I'm not terribly familiar with them.

The parts are case hardened so you have to be careful as to how much you take off. If you have the ability to re heat treat the parts after you file and hone and polish, you would be good as gold. Otherwise, you may want to think about buying an aftermarket replacement.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I'd say just get an aftermarket trigger. Pop the pins and be done with it.

I just put a JP Yellow spring kit in mine as well as lightly polished with a cloth wheel. Took the pull from about 9 lbs. down to 4 and is much smoother. The spring kit was about $9 from Midway and it took all of 10 minutes to do everything.

Pick up a rockriver two stage match trigger and install it. I have one of those and like it alot, breaks at about 4 3/4, really clean. A lot of guys at AR15 diss that trigger (I don't know why) but I like it.

Yep,
I have noticed those who have problems with them, more often than not have tried to "tune" them better than they come.
Mine have held up perfectly. I have installed numerous sets on guys rilfes with zero complaints.

Mackay, I got a Colt work gun that I can't and wouldn't fiddle with, a MOA or less Larue Stealth on a Charles Daly Lower with chitty trigger and a Sabre M4ish that has an OKish trigger.
The latter two see field use and have been thinking about a Timney or McCormick because they are more for fun. You tried either of those?
I know Geissele is the heat, but don't want to spend that much for killing truck/hunting guns.

Midway has Giesselles on sale for $170 right now. If you want the ultimate AR trigger though, it'll cost you $280, 'cause that's what an AR Gold costs.

Pick up a rockriver two stage match trigger and install it. I believe this is the way I'll go - for two reasons. One is that I like the price, two is that I trust anything Mackay Sagebrush says... Where's the best place to order one of these....?

Miculek ain't BS'in about that trigger, I've had a chance to play with one, it comes adjusted to 3.5# but can be lowered to half that, and still runs great with M855 or PMC. I'm going to get one in the future, after I get my next upper together. This stuff can get expensive.

A lot of guys at AR15 diss that trigger (I don't know why) but I like it. The RRA has a bad rap on ARFCOM because a couple have failed relatively short in life. Who knows if this is just internet BS or whatnot? I have an RRA match in one of my AR's and its a good drop in trigger. I also have a Jewell in the other. Probably one of the best triggers I have ever used, but I'm not sure it was worth the cost.

I run RRNM's and just replace the brad that's prone to fail with a SS pin.

TominBoise,
I appreciate the vote of confidence. If only my wife did!
I got my last batch straight from RRA.
I think I recall Rost saying something about getting a good deal on them from somewhere. He is quite a resource in AR related stuff.
I must admit I am out of the loop on the latest and greatest. I have used the Geissele before, but for the nature of the recreational and paper punching stuff I do, I have come to be very satisfied with RRA triggers.
BTW, If you get one and are not familiar with installing them, give me a shout. I get over to Boise every other month or so.

RockRiver makes a fine trigger, especially for the money.
Don't like it? Send it back, RR will take care of you adjusting it or fixing it or whatever is needed.
What a bunch of idiots on Arfcom! If they can't win matches with a RR trigger, let me tell you, it ain't because of the trigger!
