Not an expert on savage 22's; but supposedly bought one NIB yesterday.Label on box says, "model 23A sporter" ".22 CAL.Box Magazine Repeating Rifle" Has the savage no. 5 NRA rear sight, that can be adjusted for elevation and windage; and front sight that is a little higher than normal.SN-95,XXX on right side by bolt.Serial nimber written on box along with date purchased I think[11/19/32. Also has a one piece brass cleaning rod [3 ft. long. Just talkin here, but thought it was pretty neat, seeing a gun that looks new in box, that is almost 80 years old. Can't believe box is still in one piece. Having fun, Doug
What kind of story is behind an 80 year old new in box gun? Did seller have any insight into why this gun (in theory) stayed new in box this long? Just wondering....... Bruce
Yeah, Don; Not big on 22's, but just couldn't resist the fact that this gun and box stuck together for 78 years; especially back then. Why would you keep the box, especially on a 10-20 dollargun. Kinda neat. One of those things where you just had to have it; at least for awhile. Take care, Doug
No real story,[wish there was], but a friend of mine picked it up at a small gunshop in the country. He knew I collected 99's, so brought it to show me yesterday at a little gun show.I traded a winchester94 in 32-40 for it because he collects winchesters. That's all he knew, but I was intrigued, so I traded. It made good conversation for an hour or so,because we were boyh trying to figure out what it's value is.That's what makes this so much fun.
Any artwork worth looking at on the lid? Sorta like the Winch picture boxes? Very neat find. And a cleaning rod to boot.

Interesting... From the little I have seen, Savage boxes of the early 30s for both the Fox shotguns and Savage 99s had a green and white end label. I own a Fox (pre-savage) with the box and then saw a 99G from the early 30s with a box and have seen several early 30s Savage made Fox shotguns with the box and all matched but clearly the label was taken from Fox... very possible that Savage had their own other label... though why did they use the Fox style label for the 99s?? My limited experience is also not worth trusting....
here is one of my Fox shotguns from 1928... the G that I saw had the same layout to the label. I was confused when you said there are two screaming Indian on the end label.
Mine is a little different.Has 2 screaming indians; 1 in the upper right corner; one in the upper left corner.About 3/4 inch oval.Sorry for my ignorance on pictures. I will have to get someone to do it for me when I get a chance.
some pics for Doug, I don't the first thing about 23s but sure looks like a cherry one! Only label like that, I have ever seen but that ain't saying much.
Saw a 1919 NRA first variation NIB in 22 Short once. Same type of box with same rod. The pieces of wood had some cloth on them where they touched the rifle.
This 23 has a couple of extras. The receiver sight nor the USMC style front sight (copied from the USMC design for the 1903 Springfield) were not "stock" on 23 As, only on 1919s.
