One problem was the bullet, the 110 grain soft points were sort of slow to expand past 40 or 50 yards.

Isn''t the problem that the 30 carb is more like a pistol than a rifle cartridge? So I would treat it like a 9mm pistol. Anything that you would hunt with a 9mm would be perfect for the 30 carb. Deer would be out smaller stuff would be good though. IMHO.

While it might work for deer and bigger stuff in a pinch. It would not be my choice as the risk of wounding and losing an animal that sze is pretty high.

The round used to be specifically mentioned in the MN state regs as being illegal for deer. They changed rules awhile back,I dont know if it is legal now or not.

Ballistically, it's essentially a semi-automatic .32-20.

Judge accordingly.

they were designed for close work for the military.building clearing ETC not for field long range work. used at short range 50 yds and under they will take any North American game. less grizzley bears. grin

Yes and no, depending on the bullet used. A softpoint .32-20 bullet, yes; a cast lead .32-20 bullet, no. I know a bunch of old-timers who took their first deer with a .32-20. It was a popular "boy's caliber" for deer hunting up here in Wisconsin back in the day.

I saw a short on this titled something like "The much maligned 30 carbine". They shot some melons and things if I recall but in the end said it was a fine deer round -for close shots of course. I would much rather go against a guy with a 9mm at 70 yds than one of these. Seem like the ideal truck gun. Anyone know off top how it stacks up against say a mini 30?

7.62x39 has about 400 fps and 13 grains in bullet weight over the .30 Carbine. Accuracy in most of its semi auto platforms is good to fair, depending upon criteria, but MOH out to 300 meters.

Can't a gunsmith straighten a slightly bent barrel?

I agree, and I tend to keep my 32-20 shots on deer to around 50 yards or under... its worked just fine every last time. I have not run a carbine into a game animal yet, but being the ballistics are about the same, given the right bullet choice, and some ethics on distances, angles, size of game, and shot location, good to go.

I used an Iver Johnson 30 carbine a long time ago to hunt wild goats, on an island off SoCal. It worked fine with 110gr round nose soft points.

Interesting article... I"ve only talked to vets that used it from the Korean war, and to the last one they all said it was gimme an M1 anyday. Evidently the round did not do well for one shot stops especially against the heavily clothed Chinese troops... while they'd shoot one and knock him down, he'd be right back up again. One Staff Sgt even said he preferred the 45...

But its all I heard, I have no personal experience of course.

Try Gunbroker. I have a Carbine that had a worn out barrel (last four inches smooth) and bought one from a guy on GB and had my armorer install it.

I'd put the 30 Carbine way ahead of a 9mm pistol.

A 110gr bullet at 2000 fps/977 ft-lbs, is a lot more snot than a 124gr at 1200 fps/396 ft-lbs.

If you'd hunt it with a .357, you can hunt it with a carbine, keeping it under 75-100 yards. And they're not nearly as inaccurate as many believe.
