Handgun (emphasis mine, in a naive attempt to keep this thread focused) Recently I was reminded of a photo I once say of Massad Ayoobs Home Defense handgun (at one time, I have no idea if he still uses it). And wouldnt you know it, I found a photo of it; its the top one. Beretta 92 with 6 ported barrel, night sights, flashlight with pressure pad, and factory 20 round (93r) magazine. This gun made a lot of sense to Ayoob. So whats your handgun of choice, and why?

Depends upon which room you're talking about... Right now, THE nightstand handgun, because both myself and the wife shoot it very well, it has nightsights, a light, and points pretty naturally for both of us, is a Glock 20 with 15 rds of PMC Starfires on deck, and 15 Winchester STHPs backing those up. It certainly isn't the only HD handgun in/around the house, but it's the nightstand version.

Even better, a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 in 9mm using Glock 33 round mags, with a tactical light attached.

I've got an old 1911, Series 70, .45 that's mine. Why ? Because I know from experience that I can use it effectively in the dark w/o the lights on. It seems to simply become an extension of my arm whem I grab it. The sights have white dots which show up well with any light. It's loaded with WW white box 230 gr. HP's. It shoots dead on at 25 yds. I don't sleep with it in the open. If somebody makes it to the bedroom while I'm still asleep, I don't want him to see it. BTW, there are hot prowl artists that are that good. I may one day add a laser gunsight to it. Just haven't yet. E

KevinGibson: Don't take anyone elses "expert advice" when making a decision YOUR life and maybe your families lives may depend on! Buy and get REAL familiar with a Glock pistol in 40 S&W caliber, equip it with night sights, GOOD ammo and a high capacity magazine and sleep soundly! I have made up my OWN mind after years of hands on experience of my OWN - and this is ONE of the ways "I protect my home". Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

VarmintGay....
Kevin IS an expert, with more experience backing up his thoughts than you'd likely be able to comprehend.
He's simply asking opinions from the rest of us, because he's curious.

Colt stainless Gov't .45. Two eight round mags, Federal HS 230 gr or maybe Win SXT 230 gr. Cocked and locked, of course.
I have to admit some interest in adding night sights to it, or getting one of the new XSE rail guns, and adding a light.

I have a Series 70 Gov't model in a case that looks like a day planner sitting on the nightstand next to a surefire flashlight but the reality is I would go for and could probably deploy the Rem 1100 that's under the bed faster. In fact, a few years ago, I ran off six guys who were going to burglarize me and my neighbors at 4:45 in the morning with my wife's 870 because that's was what was closest to the door.

I will go against the grain here and say my HD weapon is a pump shotgun not a handgun. My reasons are- I think a shotgun is tactically superior in my home then a handgun. Its not as likely to kill my neighbors with rounds passing though walls. Also it is cheaper, if it gets stolen, or i lose it for whatever reason, im only out about 200 bucks, so its easier to replace than a thousand dollar 1911.
Sure a handgun is handier, easier to use with a flashlight, clearing rooms ect. But I dont have kids in the house to rescue, just dogs that will keep an intruder busy while I hold up waiting for the cavalry. No need for me to clear my house and risk my life over property. The good stuff is with me in my safe room anyway.

Ideal?
A modern iteration of Ayoob's house gun: G34C with CTC Lasergrip, a 33-rd "Happy Stick" full of hot 115 JHPs, and a handheld SureFire M3 Combat light.
Recoil would be mild.
What I have?
G35, CTCLG, 15 rounds of hot 155s & M3. Might be cool to morph it with a ported 6-in. .357 SIG bbl.
There is a G19 w Happy Stick in another part of the house.

A Sig229 DAK in .357 with a light on the rail is "bedstand" gun. If I'm forced to utilize deadly force in my home, the AG's office might as well take my Dept. pistol rather than one of mine.
If for some reason that was left in my locker (going on vacation the next day, etc.) I would find myself with a S&W "1911" with the same light on its rail.

Besides my three Basset hounds I rely on my S&W Mod 60 loaded with mid-range wadcutters which is, coincidentally, the same round my wife keeps in her bedside S&W Mod 36. For those suddenly-wide-awake-at-3AM moments I prefer revolvers because they are totally fumble free-- just point and squirt. I load wadcutters because they produce less recoil, thus improving recovery time, and while not being in the same league as a .454 Sex-Crazed Zombie Stopper, a .38 will do the job... if you do yours.
Next to the Smith' is my plain-jane CZ75, loaded to the gills with Federal's 147-gr. Premium Vital Shock ammo... just in case the zombies are feelin' frisky.

If you had threatened to strangle a puppy if someone suggested other than a handgun, it might have gone four posts vs. two, but this is the internet, folks are going to answer the question you should have asked, not the one you did.
