Feds give early OK to limited wolf hunt in Idaho
Federal wildlife officials have signaled their preliminary approval for Idaho's petition to kill up to 60 endangered gray wolves from packs that have been preying heavily on big game herds in the upper Clearwater River Basin.

Good news, but I'll bet that this does not allow a "hunting"season, it just will make it easier for Widlife Services to do their jobs.

Still better than nothing. Hope MT is allowed similar allowances next. Bet WY won't be given the same latitude...

WildWest: Good question!
And how in the world are the recently transplanted Canadian Wolves "endangered" here in the Rocky Mountains???
Back in 1995 the Feds promised ONLY 325 Canadian Wolves TOTAL in all of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and then the states could regulate the population there AT 325 Wolves!!!
So now we are in excess of 1,700 Wolves and now some activist judge "proclaims" they are endangered when they are at least 5 1/4 times more populous than what was initially determined to be "optimum"!
By the way those of us who opposed the transplantation of Canadian Wolves to the Rocky Mountain west were told that even the feds did not want more than 325 Wolves total because once beyond that number the Wolves would have detrimental and lasting effects on the Elk, Moose and Bighorn Sheep herds!
Endangered my ass - the Wolves were brought here for ONE reason and ONE reason only; to put an end to sport hunting!
60 Wolves in Idaho being eliminated when 600 need to be eliminated is not even a good start.
The Elk in many parts of Idaho have suffered mightily.
Wolf pups are due out soon and we will be back over 2,000 Wolves where only 325 was the original "trouble free" goal!
Endangered, yeah right - just another lie.

Ran across this sign a few years ago while hiking in Idaho, up near the Montana border. The state was trapping wolves even then. God Bless 'em!

The state was divided into zones and a quota was set for each zone. Some of those zones had almost no wolves so of course the quotas weren't met. If they'd had a single quota for the whole state, it might have been met from the more heavily populated areas.

Read it close boys.

"U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials stressed Thursday that a final decision on Idaho's plan has not been made."

"The environmental review published Thursday opens a 30-day comment period. Kelly said it could be weeks or months before a decision is made."

The answer to this is blatantly obvious, but I am not going to state it. With no disrespect intended.

Anyone who's ever hunted in central Idaho would know why its so hard to remove the wolves from there. Its the largest primitive area in the lower 48 states, access is extremely difficult, so the wolves can pretty much do as they please, which is to totally wipe out what once was some huge elk herds.
The herds are so small & out of balance now that they will never recover in my lifetime. The Fish & Game released a graph last year that showed over 90% mortality on elk calves for 3 years in a row. Not hard to figure out whats down the road for our elk. We got this rammed down our throats & the city slickers are dancing in the streets!

Their plan to eliminate hunting includes bears but they don't increase their numbers or their range nearly as fast as wolves.
