Almost picked one up, black forend tip, chambered for 6mm Remington with a 4x Leupold on top, $500. Worth it?

$150-200 scope...

Yeah, the action alone is worth the $300-350.

6mm Remington could have it twisted either 1-12" or 1-9", depending upon when it was built.

Doubt it'd stay 6mm Rem, but just sayin'.

I wish I'd bought a few when I could still afford them.

I stand corrected. thats definatly a factory stock. The 2 I have don't have the foreend/gripcap on them. Any experts know when they did that? A little latter in the production run? Or was it an adl/bdl thing?

That looks all original. You can D&T a second hole on the rear bridge to make Talley LWs for a Rem 7 to fit nicely - lows will work just fine. Another thing is to buy an aluminum TG from CVMW here on the campfire. Numrich sells a walnut replacement stock too.

I love 600/660s!

Sean, weren't all the 1-12" twisted guns marked ".244 Remington"?

I just picked one up from a Friend in 308 for $400. It was a very good deal. Hard to find one in any reasonable shape for under $500. Bought one new in '71 for $95 marked down from $124. Wish that I had never of sold it. They shot extremely well. Very strong action, fully floated to the recoil lug. IMO - an improvement over the 600. The downside are these - Some don't like the dogleg bolt and square forearm. The nylon bottom usually warps. Just need to find a 6mm rem. to match. Looks like a very good deal.

The 600/660 came along long after Rem changed the twist rate...twist rate was changed from 12" to 9-1/4" when the 700 was intro'd in '62 and the name was changed to 6mm from 244, although there are reports of some 700's leaving the factory with 12" twist barrels...probably pulled from the 722 barrel pile.

I had one of those 660's with the nicer stock, was a 308 that someone had chopped to 18"...put a 22" 700 barrel in 6mm into it...shoulda kept that one.

PA GUS - Never saw a 660 that didn't look like the one pictured. But that doesn't mean that Rem. didn't throw some out with a older 600 stock on them, just to get rid of inventory. The 600 Mohawk came after the 660, and they had a stock without the plastic tip and some had birch stocks.

ya... i read to fast, and thought it was a 600. After my second cup of coffee, and fetching my glasses, I see the error of my ways. Sucks getting old doesn't it? blush
