I just returned from the range, where I was trying out some loads for my 270 WSM. I have been working on loads for this rifle for a few weeks with less than satisfying results velocity wise with H4350, and H4831. Accuracy with those powders was acceptable at less than 1 moa.
My velocity results with RL 17 were much more satsfactory, and accuracy was very good as well. I shot the 150gr partition .83 at 100, and 1.78 at 200 remove the flier and it would have been 1.42. Those were 5 shot groups.
For the Chrono I only fired 3 shots, so not a significant statistical sample.
150gr Partition
RL17 59gr - 3016 3072 3072 (first shot from clean bore)
RL17 59.5gr - 3086 3086 3086 (this load chosen for accuracy testing)
RL17 60gr - 3086 3075 3093
Obviously these loads appear to be safe in my rifle and you should work up loads carefully in your own rifle.
This was Lot 02709 for those interested, as I have read where people have had varying results with different Lots.

Thanks for the info. I usually run 140s over RL25.

I will work on the 140gr Accubond next, possibly next weekend.
I also took a look at RL25 but decided on RL17 because it is supposed to be temp insensitive, I will try to verify that this summer.

I am not a fan of R17 in the shortmags. I have never found it to do anything as well as vv560.

What sort of results have you had with both RL17, and vv560?

Knight: As I recall, I tried Rldr-17 in my previous .270 WSM, a Kimber and that was with a 150 Sierra. As I recall, (don't have the info at hand right now) I got rather anemic velocities with it too. Something a bit over my .270 Win. @ 2930 fps with a 150 Partition (~ 3020?). At the time, I had a Kimber and found that I got about 3200 fps with a 150 gr. Sierra and a near max. charge of Retumbo. My current .270 WSM is an Extreme Weather and I get 3225 fps with it and the same powedr and charge of Retumbo. This is showing very good possibilities in accuracy as well. I've also tried IMR-7828 SSC and velocities are close or about equal to the Retumbo load. I have considerably more work to do on this rifle but thought that what I've found so far might be of help to you. I think your listed velocities are far too anemic and you can get better. Good luck & have fun. Bear in Fairbanks

Bear,
Thanks for the advice. I thought about Retumbo, but I dropped a 70gr charge of 4831sc into a case. I would have to compress the living crap out of it to stuff the 150gr Partition into it with how deep I have to seat in order to be .020 off the lands. I have never messed with even a slightly compressed load, I just dont like the idea of the powder pushing back against the projectile, although I do realize many people have experienced great results with compressed loads.
My 270 wsm is also an Extreme Weather, I am very pleased with it so far, it is looking like a keeper(that would make my wife way too happy).

The best group I have ever shot from my M70 270wsm consisted of 57 gr RL 17 behind a 150 gr nosler partition gold bullet, three shot group measured .569. Velocity wise I am getting 2970 for a five shot average.
