Posted in the handgun section also.
Hey guys. I am a newbie on this site but have been amazed with all the diverse knowledge that is shared here ... ok, enough with the butt kissing, LOL.
I have run across a couple of .357's that I might pick up but want to make sure the prices are fair. I have not seen either of these guns yet but the seller states they are in good shape (I know that the condition can/will affect the value). The first is a S&W 686, 4" barrel, stainless, wooden S&W grips, no internal lock for $450. The second one is a Colt Python, 6" barrel, blued, wood colt grips for $1,000. Neither gun has box or paperwork. Fair deals or keep on looking???
Thanks for any and all input.

Prices good, not stellar. The Python is a bit much without box. The 686 is righ on target.

686 is a good deal for around here, no internal lock and stainless. I would pick it up if local. The python is a little to much without the box. I'm thinking $800-$900.

I collect Pythons and would have to say you are probably going to be hard pressed to find a Python in good condition for under $1000. As long as there isn't a bunch of bluing wear you will be fine. Check the serial # if it is an early one you will be even better off.

I agree. Python is pricey, 686 is fairly priced. Make an offer. Offer....say.....$1200 cash for both. A lot of times it works.

Good price on the 686 if the condition is very good. The 4" may not be the most desirable length, but $450 is a decent around here.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am going to look at them tomorrow and see how it pans out.
Jesse, what kind of serial number range would I be looking for to know if it was an early serial number? Is there a place to check the serial number to get an age on the Python or do I have to call Colt?
Thanks again for all the help.
Any other ideas, suggestions, thoughts?

The most collectible are the ones that don't have any letters in the serial #. Also if it has full checkered grips it would be an real early one (like in the 50's). I am sure there are several places on line that you can look the serial numbers up on. If not send me a message and I have a book that tells.

Bring cash. Money talks and BS walks, as the man says... In today's economy a stack of C-notes carries a lot of weight in any gun deal.
