I have a #1 contour featherweight 22 inch barrel in a .284 diameter. I am wanting to build a lightweight rifle for deer, elk, and sheep. What caliber would you build and why?

With the 22" Featherweight contour I'd go with the 7mm-08.

7-08 because it does everything you need it to do in a compact package, with enough bullet weight to get the job done without excessive recoil.

280 (280AI is also an option today but I might ike a bit longer tube). Why? Because it uses a good range of bullet weights at high enough velocity to make it a superb choice for the game you mentioned;can be housed in a 7-7.5 lb scoped rifle, recoils moderately, and will kill well.

You will move 140 gr bullets of choice at 3000-3080 or so from that barrel;and if you want you will get 160 gr bullets to 2850 or so;although for much of what you might want to do, you won't need anything but a good 140...

Personally it would be my choice in a FW 22" contour barrel.

7mm-08. I built the same weapon. 22" buggy whip barrel on a 700 action in a Micky Remington Classic stock. Few things are safe out to 600 yards. Flinch

Imagination is all you've got and it's prudent that you practice it.

I would build a 7STW because of its ultra flat trajectory, and because i have always wanted one after i shot my friends.
