I am looking to add bow hunting to my list of outdoor activities and am looking for advice on a bow. I don't want to spend a fortune on a bow until I am committed to bow hunting. Any recommendations in the less than $500 range?

Try a bunch of used bows from as many companies as you can. Buy what feels the best to you. You can't go wrong with Mathews, Bowtech, and Hoyt that is for sure. But there are other good comapnies out there besides those three.

As above, shoot plenty of bows, then find the one you like used on a site like this one or archerytalk, ebay, craigslist...used bows are available everywhere for reasonable prices and usually come fully rigged ready to hunt with some tuning of your own.

Used bows are a great way to start. You can get a year or two old top of the line model for less than 1/2 price. It would be nice if you had a buddy that knew what was going on. He can help set you up and get you started on the right foot. If not, try local clubs and pro shops.
