Buddy of mine used to pick them up all the time until a hot little number flagged him down then proceeded to try and rob him.. He saw the pistol and hit the gas. Went back with the cops and she was gone...
Speak softly and use a big bore... Where's El Cid when we need him...
back in ther late 60's and early 70's i did, but not since then.
Same here. There was time when bumming rides was pretty common and accepted. I remember when a GI could stand by the side of the road in uniform, and it wouldn't take long for somebody to pick him up. I did that many a time. Vietnam changed all that.

Stupidity has its way, while its cousin, evil, runs rampant.
Yes I have picked up quite a few, only when my wife's not w/ me. Ive even fed em' and bought em' smokes, When they climb in the cab and realize they just loaded up w/a silver back go-rilla all has been good so far, All I have seen are kinda nervous smiles. If they had any bad intentions, I havent seen any to date. But I remain prepared, and I like to help when I can, but wont die for it.

It sure was a decent way to travel when I was a kid. My buddy and I hitched while carrying shotguns back in the mid 70's quite a bit. We even got a lift from a Greyhound Bus, no passengers on board only the driver.
When I was a kid we use to hitch hike everywhere. I once got a ride from Willy Shoemaker (the jockey) in his big Ol' Cadillac with blocks screwed to the pedals, and I thought that was real cool.
Never pick up anyone anymore, and only see about 1 hitch hiker a year...
Old Fishermen never die, we just get reel tired.
