Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me out. I have been hearing conflicting information about getting into Canada. I have the opportunity to go to Ontario this August for a black bear hunt. Here is the dillema:)
Back in 1985 I had a OWI, drunk driving whatever you want to call it:)I was young and dumb:) I had heard if it was over 10 years old it was pretty much a non issue.
I have one more issue. Back in 2001 while I was in the process of getting divorced. Ugly thing. Anyway we were both charged with misdemeanor bail jumping. Its not quite what it sounds like. We had a defered prosecution agreement. She flipped out one day( we were living apart but close to one another)I went to the Sheriffs Dept and filed a complaint. Since we had agreed not to have any verbal or physical altercations in our def prosecution agreement. They charged us both with Misdemeanor bail jumping because we did not live up to the agreement. THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Even a OWI 25yrs ago can keep you out of Canada if the custom's agent is a jerk. And a Misdemeanor less than 10yrs may pose a problem also.
Definitely contact CA custom's before you make plans. I have seen 3 hunter's turned back in the last 6 yrs from misdemeanor, dui & a 14yr old domestic dispute.

In Canada, OWI, or impaired driving is a hybrid offence -- both a felony and a misdemeanor. For most purposes, it is treated as a felony, so you will likely need a pardon.

You could / will have problems at the border unless you declare rehabilitation in advance. File your paper and pay your $'s now so it will be straitened out by August.

My wife works Canadian Imagration....You can apply for a ministry Permit ..it will cost a couple hundred bucks for all there paper work and if accepted will clean that up for you...What is the fascination with bear hunting..just start the barby and shoot them of the deck..but get started now to get the paper work done in time

A US lawyer could probably have your OWI record expunged. Maybe the other one, too.
Might be worth looking into, as the repercussions of a clean record would apply to many more situations than just a bear hunting trip to Ontario.

Get working on a pardon for both offenses, ..the OWI requires a course that costs, and your lawyer can work on the other pardon. It takes time, and 2 years is a minimum, ..i've had several hunters have to go through the procedure prior to coming to Canada,
