The .270 is a POS...

And there's a POS .270 boat paddle ruger in a local pawnshop I'd love to buy!

That was said in jest by a guy who knows a helluva lot more than many of us. The .270 is undoubtedly one of his top picks. I too have been using it for 35 years, from pronghorn to elk, 2 Dall, 1 Stone, Mt. Goat and countless deer. Its so perfect we tend to overlook it and in the process miss out on a stellar performer. Y'all talking about the Po boys 300, I like it , flat shootin and hard hittin round. I don't have near the experience most on here do but what I do have has been with the 270 Winchester. If you do your job it'll do it's job.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

It was always obvious to me that Bob's line was facetious. Somebody else had one, I'm thinkin' Dober, that said something like a .25-06 is a .270 that took a week off of working out, but can still do the job, or something like that. Since I'm fond of the .25-06, I always thought that was funny.

I've never owned a .270, just like I've never owned a 9mm. Kinda. Last year I got a Glock 357 Sig, which shoots 9mm diameter bullets, but kinda speedy like. I've used .280's and .30-06's and .25-06's and such, but never a .270. I'm starting to think I mebbe ought to get one. Back when I was a teenager, my plan was to have 3 Remington 700 BDL's..a .270 for deer, a 7mm Rem Mag for elk, and a .30-06 to use as a backup for the other two. Didn't work out that way..never does, I guess. I may not have ever had a .270, but I give it the respect it's due, for having been around so long, for being as effective as it is, and for being one of the top 5 American big game cartridges of all time.

And as for Elmer Keith, I never paid much heed to anything that man said. Mostly because a lot of the time he was just plain wrong.

Perhaps...but I have not yet seen the 270 with 130 Partitions being shot on the tv show Best of the West...seems like use the 7 mag with 168 Bergers for those long range shots... wonder if that poster also uses a big 7??? smile

I have more DRT kills with a .270 than any other cartridge I have used including the mighty .257 Wby. Hardly makes sense that I don't own one right now. I can only attribute to my desire to try different stuff. When it came time to build my son a rifle though the choice was easy... A .270. He has killed enough stuff with it now that you couldn't pry it from his hands with a crowbar. Smart kid...

Yes. Big deer anyway. (I really don't know about small ones; thinking it might be a bit much. laugh

Yes. 140 A-Frames loaded entirely with a little Lee Loader -using the included scoop and all ........the night before. (I was running out of check/sight-in ammo and had no choice. We were at camp already.)

3 deer, three bang flops with the .270. In two cases I recovered from the recoil, and see a deer flat on the ground. The deer had hit the ground before I even got back on him in the scope. The 3rd was an exception - he stood straight up on his hind legs, then collapsed in a heap.

I will admit, however, last year I got on a lease with tons of smallish deer, so I am shooting a .30-30 Contender carbine, with the idea of a bit less meat loss, and a bit less noise to spook other deer in the area.

Tis a good round the .270 Win,,, hunted deer with one for 8-10 years, killed 20-25 deer very well,,,was a little overkill for NC whitetails though, use a 7mm-08 now, it's a shortened .270 as far as performance goes
