I would like to try my hand at building a set. Anyone know of some good plans? Thanks...

Do it like the African trackers. Take two fairly sticks of appropriate length and put them together with some old tire innertube at the top. You can also use various other systems such as rope or cord to put the sticks together. Mine cost maybe 50 cents.

Your shooting sticks: Each 'stick' should be about 4" longer than you are tall! Good quality pine about 1/2"> is fine. Find some with no knots and good grain the length of the dowel. You can drill a 1/4" hole in each about 4" down from 'the top' of each. Put a suitable bolt with a 'nyloc' nut through the holes with a pair of nylon or similar washers between the sticks and tighten it up. Take an old leather glove and cut off the first and second fingers leaving a strip of leather holding them together. Glue them over the two ends of the sticks so that them form a protective cover and a 'stock cradle' for your rifle. Varnish or paint the whole ensemble and your sticks are done. If any of this doesn't make sense..let me know!:)

I have some slender Sassafrass saplings that are now drying so I can make a set of "sticks" of them.

Might be a bit too flexible?

the flexibility for the length may be an issue. Why not ram a dowel down the inside! But for anyone travelling overseas or flying, they gotta fit in yr gun bow so you have to have a socket joint! This is not a bad idea as sometimes terrain is best suited to a short pair of sticks that you can use kneeling!
