Thought I'd post a picture of the hunting rifle John Pierce from Pierce Engineering built for me. This is my first true custom hunting rifle. Here are the specs:

Pierce long action
#3 Contour Broughton barrel - .270 Win @ 23"
Pierce rail machined extra low to my spec
Pierce bottom metal
McMillan Edge stock
Jewell Trigger
Graphite Black Cerkote (Tactical Grey cerakote on bolt)

I intend on using a Nightforce 2.5-10x32mm scope with ultralight NF rings on this rifle.

I'll have to post more pics and a range report after I test the rifle on the range this weekend. I can't say enough about Pierce Engineering. Those guys were great to work with and build terrific rifles.

Looks great, the Pierce actions seem to be getting very popular, my 270win has a #3 broughton and it shoots tiny clusters...should be an awesome shooter!

Thanks guys. I'm pretty excited about the rifle and am looking forward to taking it out this fall for antelope and deer. It's not one of the most exciting new hotrod calibers, but for me the ol' .270 win should handle pretty much everything I need it to.

Looks like a good all around setup. What bullets are you planning on shooting?

I've got some testing to do on bullets so I'm not sure what I'll end up using. In a .308 Rem 700 rifle I've been using the last few years, I've used Nosler BTips, Accubonds and Sierra Gamekings. I've killed pronghorn and deer with all of the above over the last few years.

For this rifle, I'm going to start with 130 gr Nosler Accubonds & BTips, and also will try the 140 gr Accubond bullet for a mixed bag whitetail/elk hunt in Alberta this fall.

I tinker around quite a bit with handloading, so I'm sure I'll try other bullet and powder combinations as well. That's what makes this fun . . .

Nice looking rifle that you have. I looked at their website and did not see any prices for a custom build. I was just curious as to how much a rifle like that would set a man back?

That is a sweet rig and I bet holds very steady offhand. Enjoy that fine piece.

Curtis That is a great looking rifle. Id say the 140gr AB is my favorite 277cal bullet. Id suggest trying it over H4831sc or RL22.

John was very reasonable in his pricing. I actually sent him the McMillan stock that I had and he fit his action and the Broughton to the supplied stock. For those services (bedding, cerakoting, furnish and fit trigger, custom rail, bottom metal, etc), he lists each individual cost on his website except for the cost of the barrel (which in this case was about $320). When all is said and done, the cost will be around $2500 or so including the stock (I haven't yet added it all up). Quite reasonable for what you are getting and if it handles and shoots like I think it will, I'll be happy.

R-22 and 4831SC was the right suggestion......

A favorite load I had was 54 or near max load of IMR 4350 behind a 130 grain bullet. It always shot better than the famed 60 4831 load.

H380 would get the 90-100 grainers cooking.

Justifiably excited. Great looking piece. The old .270 will run with the best of them. Good choice, gun and caliber.
