Given the bullets in each provides the capability higher BC's you can find a high BC 7mm bullet.
And the slightly wider neck in a 7mm which lets you have potentially higher speeds with the same weight bullets.
Isn't the 7-08 better for the following reasons -
1) Wide off the shelf availabilty of ammo 2) Very possibly a higher resale due to popularity 3) Wider range of bullets 4) More brass available
I think it is..

No, you have to shoot 168's to get the same BC you get with 140's in a 260. Nobody shoots a 7mm/08 in competition for this reason.
Is a 7/08 a great hunting round? You betcha. I think the B&C reticle was designed for it, 140's zeroed at 200yd make the reticle(s) work at 300, 400, and 450, which is about as far as most of us have any business taking a shot.

I think it is.. without getting technical .284 vs .264 = no difference in the killing end..dead is dead

I admit it - I am totally biased toward 6.5's. I've got 260 Remingtons and 6.5X55mm Swedes. All great and better (in my biased mind, at least) than the 7mm (and I've got those also).

Given your definition of "better" then I guess it is. As for actual performance on game, if you can tell the difference; I'd be absolutely amazed. Take_a_knee give a good example where it's infeior under one definition of "better", but it all comes down to what your definition of "better" is. Given your definition of "better":
1) Wide off the shelf availabilty of ammo 2) Very possibly a higher resale due to popularity 3) Wider range of bullets 4) More brass available
You'll never beat the .30-06 in standard length, and .308 in short action. And again, when you're talking about the taking of game, if you can tell the difference when game is hit with a .260, .270, or .308, then you're just amazing.

Are there any *bad* cartridges?
Not really. Only ones that don't suit your needs.

Both are really neat cartridges and could serve most hunters needs without issue.
I do think that rifles chambered in .260 Rem bring more on the resale market. There just aren't as many of them around.
One aspect of both the .260 and 7-08(add 7 Mauser), much like the 25-06 and .257, is the lack of recoil and how easy they are to shoot. This sure helps one get comfortable with a rifle, and there's nothing quite like the confidence instilled while carrying a comfort gun.

Having shot a bit of game with a 7mm-08 in the first years it was out, and having shot a bit of game with a 6.5 x 55( 260 is pretty much the same) you could spend the next 50 or so years shooting thin skinned herbivores and not be able to tell a wits difference. Far to many play with commuter generated tables and crunch numbers. Like a 0.5mm is going to make or break a deer hunt or an elk hunt. In these days of truly great bullets, the launcher is not that big a deal. I would hunt till the end of time with either one. thou I can get a 7mm-08 barrel for my Blaser R-93 can't get one in 260 but I can in 6.5 x 55 so its a moot point to say the least. Good hand loads in the Swede or the 7mm-08 makes them a pocket 270 and that is not a bad place to be.

The 7-08 is inhertily less accurate than the .260 its the hardest caliber knowen to man to keep shooting straight and will loose accurcy over night.

No real difference....in the hunting field, both are less than the .308, and more than the .243.
