Carson-Iceberg Wilderness in located in Alpine County, California. Folger Peak is approx 9500 ft elevation.

Park at Tyrone Meadow Trail Head. We've backpacked to base of Peep Sight Peak and set up camp there. Plenty of muley/blacktails within this remote area.

You'll need these items

- a hunting license for this area
- wilderness access permit from USDA
- shovel req'd to receive fire permit from USDA
- good maps are hard to find; we bought ours in Davis, Calif at a small outdoor sport shop
- folding saw to cut your kills into manageable pieces; you won't be dragging a buck at this altitude.

Weird indeed, someone has an agenda obviously........

Will add the herd has never recovered, mostly juvenile forkies are taken.

Thanks, I hunt in that area already. Maybe you would like to print an article in Field and Stream or Eastmans. You could have a map with an X on it and everything. Seriously WTF.

Cali Alpine looks a lot different than AK alpine. Cool looking country though.

Neither photo is accurate nor indicative of the area he listed.

this guy is full of crap, thoes are d-5 and d-6 zones tags available on request, however on the east slope to the state line there are two x zone you need to draw tags for. but the wilderness permits are free, and no vehicles allowed, unless your the law or the government,
you only need an access permit if your going to spend the night

I can't help but wonder if this guy really knows much about the area. The tag quota for that area, D-6, was 10,000 in 2010. The hunter sucess for 2009 was 4.5%. I live in D-5 which has a true unlimited quota. Our hunter success was 6.4%. Both of these zones, BTW, include private land kills which has much better hunting than the public land.
It isn't hard to get a tag if you apply early enough. But that might change this year.
The harvest of bucks breaks down into 48.6% forks, 33.2% 3 pointers, 14% 4 pointers and 3.8% 4 pts or more. Nothing outstanding there. D-5, for instance, produces more big bucks than that. In fact, it's one of the better deer zones in total numbers of 4 plus point bucks.
Another thing is, and I've seen this alot, the wilderness zones often have very few deer of any kind in them. I hate to say this, but the nos. 2 & 3 biggest bucks I've seen in the last two years were in my yard this winter. No.1 was on private property near where I do my walking workouts. All in about 1400-1900 ft. in elevation. Not anywhere near the high country. Inspite on my spending alot of time there. E

i usually hunt d-3, however i dont really see many deer in that area,(which makes me wonder why i hunt there at all) but i have been seeing increasing numbers of bears, a guy i know said a bear could smell the birth of a fawn from a couple mile out and be there in a hurry to eat it.

Have a friend who has noticed that too. Make sure you buy a bear tag. E

The openers in D-5,D-6 are the reason I started bowhunting 25 [or so] years ago

Wow! There are some aggressive folks within this forum.

I'm not inviting anyone to go hunting with me. I was simply sharing a favorite backpack hunting location. Whether anyone acts upon this shared info is entirely up to that person.

The Carson-Iceberg Wilderness is not for an overweight or out of shape hunter. The high altitude can not be ignored.

Why would you share your favorite hunting location on a public forum?

Your full of BS and then some.
