Did Savage take a small number of the 99F, have them engraved, and then sell the rifle as a model 99DE or PE ? When did Savage make the DE or PE and how can you tell a DE from a PE ? Lastly, how rare is a 99PE / 284 WIN ?
Looking for any information on the PE or DE. Thanks

There are some blued DE's and 0ne or more blued Pe.The 284 PE was the least made of That model. The DE has scroll engraving, the PE has trees, there is more than one style engraving for the PE and the DE!!

The PE and DE are more closely a DL. They came in 243, 284, 308. 308 is by far the most common. I have seen more in 284 than 243 but the general consensus is the 284 is the rarest.
As mentioned there are at least two different engravings on the PE and at least three finishes, blued, gloss metal or coin, and then a flat metal. The flat plain metal finish is the only one that I personally like. You see the DE in coin more often than the PE.
Not much else to say.

Were they also "acid etched" like the CE?

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

There is at least one .250. Saw it at Amoskeag several years ago. Brought big money. Dont recall whether it was DE or PE. Engraving quality bad.

Thats some nice Savages, I think people think it's a F variation b because the 308 I have has the barrel "boss" for the rear sight. The 284 I have does not so I think there were several variations. I think the defining factor is all came with Monte Carlo stocks, and the receivers are marked "99M". Although never say never
