I'd like to treat myself to a custom folder. Had seen one of ryan minchews and thought it was about perfect but he's not taking orders due to backlog.

Any recommendations?

What type of folder are you looking for? If you are looking for a slip joint, I would recommend T.A. Davison. His slippies are awesome and at a pretty good price. If you are looking for a liner lock type, the possibilities are endless depending on your budget, thise things can get crazy expensive. For decent priced liner locks, I'd say to contact "Doc Shiffer" for a nice knife at a good price. If you do, tell him that I sent you.

I will say that Doc is busy with a competition build right now and has several orders for a new purveyor to fill. He stays pretty busy between the shop, ambulance, and military obligations, but he does nice work and is a real stand up guy. I can e-mail you pics of some of his work. I have a couple of his fixed blades, but I have several pics of his folders I've taken at his shop.

IIRC, e3ck has been known to make a folder or two... wink

Erwin is a class act, great guy to deal with, and the quality is very, very much there.

T.A.Davison makes some very good ones. Brett Dowell, Rick Menefee,Gary Crowder, and Jerald Nickles are all good makers and make outstanding knives.

to add- Gene Wiseman from Watts, Oklahoma has been turneing out some nice high carbon shadow folders that are very nice and very solid. His prices are outstanding.

Mr. Miller;

Having seen your work, and it's NICE....

How about dragging those fellas into/onto here and have them showcase their stuff?

I have been making folders from 1095 high carbon steel but am just getting started using D-2. It seems to be a lot better at holding an edge and it is VERY rust resistant. I think that I can make a better knife from it. Just get in touch with me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Gene Wiseman

Joe Kious and Jerry Halfrich both make fantastic folders.
Here is a photo of one of Joe's out of 440V and bark ivory.

I spent about an hour last night scoping out Rick Menefee's folders on Blade Forum. I'm sure plenty of talented makers can compete and probably better his work but my buddy VinceM speaks awfully highly of him and I value his opinion.

Here's 43 pages to ponder.........

You should also talk to David Winston. From what I've seen his folders are fantastic.

Mike sent me a message about this topic. I told him I do not take orders. And after reading the original posters price range. I would have to say I'm a bit over on it? I did sale some linerless knives for $250.00, but have not made any for a while. I do make and sale knives, I appreciate the plug guys. Good luck with your search, lot of nice knives out there.

Here is one of my last ones....

Folder - #733

Elephant Ivory
ATS34
Closed - 3 1/2''

Take care,

Todd Davison
