has been beaten to death here. do a search under tubbs final finish.
con: most quality barrel makers will void warrenty if you do.
con: Savage barrels are excellent as issued.
con: it costs money and wastes money that could be spent on components.
con: shooting sand down a barrel is questional wisdom.
con: Dale McMillan thinks it's a dumb idea.

savageak, go to the gunwriters forum and search for Mule Deer's posts on this. Sample here: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth.../Number/5067220/Searchpage/1/Main/373739Biggest plus is to make the bore easier to clean. What that's worth to you is up to you. I've used Tubb's before and was happy with it, but still haven't tried any of the newer ones.

Savage barrels are excellent as issued. I've seen the exception to that statement. A friend of mine had a real rough cob barrel on a Savage 308. If he had wanted to hit a deer with a 150 he'd have needed to shoot a 180. That turd should never have made it out of the factory.

I ran boiling water through a savage 308, got metal filings out, did J&B patches, got more metal filings out.

Do you know what copper based never-seize looks like? If you do, then you also know what the sludge coming out of that barrel looked like when I JB cleaned it for my friend.

savage is my nick name from back to high school, i was not refering to fire lapping or any type of heavy abbrasive but polishing with something along the lines of flitz or something similar. don't want to change deminsion of the bore just want to make it mirror bright.

I don't think Flitz would do anything. Read up on bore lapping, and look into products like Tubbs Finish system, JB Bore Paste, and Mule Deer has been very impressed with that UltraBore Coat, which I think is now dynacoat or something.
If you're just trying to shine up a bore on an older rifle, I think you need to look beyond the Flitz at some serious bore cleaning products. I like old rifles, been there, done that.

Check with the custom barrel makers. About 320 is as fine a lapping compound that they will use. Too much polish and they will tell you it will copper foul like a rough barrel. Butch

Savagak,
Ron AKA makes a good point, is there a problem? Or do you have a barrel that is pitted or dark? I have also heard "frosted" as a way to describe a barrel that been neglected.
