Looking for a moped for my oldest kid! Sick of driving him around.
Anybody have any experience with them? I'm looking for a basic model, that is not a POS. I see Yamaha has some! Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Of course I don't know your son, but from the way I've seen some kids driving mopeds I'd opt for one with a seat belt and roll cage.

haha! Fortunately I live in a remote town of 1200 people, and the first time he tries driving like an idiot, I'll get 15 phone calls in 10 minutes.. Advantage of small town living..

Mopeds aren't bad little bikes...if you add an adaptor kit and a 1200 CC Honda engine.

My friend bought a Yamaha Vino 125. She really likes it. She's cruised around Juneau a bit on it. But that might be too big, IIRC isn't there a cc restriction for kids under 16?
Deal with it.

I think 50cc is the limit.
I live 5 miles out of town, and I've been making him walk and bike thus far. Looking to move him up to a moped so summer employment doesn't consist of me running to and from town like an idiot..

Make him get creative. He can always take apart a gas weedeater and run a belt off the power head to the gears on his bike. A little duct tape and some 50:1 mix and he'll be big pimpin'
Deal with it.

This thread is starting to sound like a Red Green show...Duct tape and all. If you don't know who I mean, just type it in at your search and it will come up.. pretty funny stuff as it is amazing what he gets done with duct tape.

A local dealer is having good success with this brand: http://www.hyosungmotorsusa.com/product/introduction.asp?Cat=Scooter&model=SF50R Another dealer is selling Kymcos that seem to be a good value. I met a college kid with a Land Rover who mostly rode a Kymco 250 because he couldn't afford gas for the Land Rover. He said the Kymco got over 60 mpg.

I believe that at his age, he can ride a 125cc or smaller. Lots of motorcycles in that range available, no reason for him to lose his pride just to acquire transportation. Motorcycles still have a fair amount of "cool" when compared to mopeds \ scooters.

At least with a scooter a 16 year-old won't be trying to do wheelies. What kind of speeds would he be up against on his commutes? Any gravel, dirt? Have been commuting on one since 2006 and have put 18k on it. As a matter of fact I ran out of work so home this afternoon getting it ready for spring, especially with the screwing we are taking with gas prices right now. Welcome to PM with questions.

Bought my oldest daughter a Yamaha Vino (50cc) which she loved until the weather started to turn and she developed this all of a sudden "fear" of driving it on the street with other vehicles. So long story short, she inherited her grandfathers car, and the Vino got traded in at a local pawn shop for a TC Pro-Hunter. Great little bike though. Ran well, no issues at all. Stick with one of the major Jap brands if you are gonna do this.

There are 100s here. Yamaha Zuma is the best and will carry 2 adults in safety. Don't forget the helmet. Just had a "spring breaker" spread his brains on US 1. No flip flops either. Get insurance with theft as stealing them is an industry. Honda is also good but has less storage. Stay away from Chinese junk or Vespa wannabes.

The larger the tires on the moped the better it will be as far as ride and safety. I have known a number of people who have had the cheap small wheel mopeds and had tire problems, one of which caused a large medical bill.

Some of those Chinese two piece welded wheels have turned into two piece again when people have been riding them. As to subject line saying *Moped*- Great in in-city tooling around, but scooter needed for roadways. There again depending on what speeds you need to maintain to keep from getting turned into roadkill will depend whether you can get by with a 50cc/125cc or 150cc+. My 150 can do 60, but doesn't like it. I can hold 50 without problem, but I don't like going that fast on a 260# Chinese rocket, especially in windy conditions.
