If you were to buy new, and wanted a lightweight rifle for deer/antelope, but wanted to keep it reasonably light. Shooting most likely under 400-500 yards.
What would be your choice for quality, and accuracy, for the price.
Earlier I was directed toward a Kimber Montana in 308 'cause the 7-08 is pretty scarce.
NULA's are out of the question. Too expensive for me.

Hold on, I'm gonna play Swampy for a minute:
Remington 700 in 30-06....best in the world, nothing else is accurate.
Now, in reality, I think your call of a Montana in .308 is where it's at. Though, in all honesty, I know schit about 'lopes. I can't imagine they kill any harder than deer, though.

Remington Model 700 ADL at Dick's Sporting Goods. If elk or large bears aren't in the picture, I'd get a .270 Winchester.

A Weatherby Vanguard, in your choice of available calibers, for $399 is damn hard to beat. Quality and accuracy, for the price...ain't no flies on that!

Obviously, based on the varying opinions above. there's no such thing as "best". IMHO it truly is a Chevy vs Ford thing. I own an absolute stock Rem model 7 in 7mm-08 that shoots 1/2" at 100 yards with most factory loads. I was very close to buying that Kimber when I ran into it in my local Basspro. It felt very nice looked great and probably would out shoot me. Would it serve me better that my mod 7? Nope. However, if I was going to get another "off the shelf" rifle I'd look hard at Cooper arms. In the mean time I rifle hunt mostly with a 1951 Savage 99 with iron sights in 300 savage.

I second CUTNHARE on the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

there is no "best". some will appear to be better than others (to you), while the one you like is trash in the eyes of others. go to a gun shop and put several different brands to your shoulder. you'll know then.

IMHO for the money you can't beat a Remington 700 Mountain rifle, like the 7X57 that was on here last week. Maybe a newer one in SS or an older one BDL style.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Ruger Hawkeye's fit that description or the Winchester model 70 FWT. The new Winchester model 70 ultimate shaddow would be a nice rifle for the money too.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
