The first one was completely sex crazed. He came pounding through the bush like a bull elephant. Tossing his head around, blowing spit.
The second was holed up in a bedding area for the week. I still hunted up to the bed and the first thing that alerted me was I could smell him. First I thought the smell of the last one was on my coat, but realized that it was fresh. Then I heard him heading for the boy about 1/8 mile away.
The rest is history. Certainly the rut was on. Early on the first, late on the last.

Thank you all. It was a wonderful season.
Last month my son came up with type 1 diabetes. That will be his last deer season without a little worry about blood sugar, carrying some carbs along and a blood test kit.
He's an incredibly capable 15 year old. Diabetes treatment is already in stride. Heck, he was weight lifting with the football team this morning and at track practice this afternoon.
It's been nice when he gets a little bummed to reminisce about the big bucks waiting in the taxidermists freezer.

Congrats to your son and your guide skills. Awesome deer. Huge bodies compared to our TX bucks. For the record, what were the gross scores?

Southern Cleawater County. Near Itasca State Park.
4 Do you think that is spill over from the park with its antler point restrictions? We hunt Nora and Rice township so you are close by.
Other than that, How was the show Mrs. Lincoln?

I'm guessing a little on the gross. I think his was 152 gross, 147 net. It think mine was 146 gross, 139 net. I'm certain of the net's, not the gross's.
We have a few theories why big bucks suddenly turned up. First, it's certainly possible that the park has more than it's share of big boys due to the antler point restriction. If they all stayed in they'd kill each other, so they might dribble out.
Another is the exceptional amount of rain we had last year following three drought years. Times were good in the deer woods last year.
Third is a little food plot I have that's two years old now. We photograph 6-8 does and fawns on it all summer. We don't hunt it. Theory is the big boys were heading to the hen house.
There were a couple of big boys on camera that we didn't shoot. A nice 12 pt and a good 10. We have high hopes.
