I would go with this one if I was shorter, because the stock does not fit me. Pick your caliber.

I wouldn't want this rifle to take a dump on me. Something simple like fail to extract or feed if a 2nd shot is warranted.

Where I live, I'm within 20 miles maybe ten miles from several gunshops, and a few gunsmiths. I may not be so lucky out west or in the mountains on a Sat afternoon.

Sounds to me like more good reasons to get a Ruger. They shoot just fine and are rugged as hell.

Ruger MKII in .300 Win Mag. 1st shot from oiled bore.

Ruger M77 in 7mm RM, 10 shots in a crosswind gusting over 40mph.

Ruger M77 in .30-06, 2-shot scope check.

Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts, 3 shots.

Nothing special done to these rifles other than float the barrel and polish the trigger.

Ruger's are very nice rifles for the money. use to be able to get them fairly cheap but everything has gotten expensive these days!

For the money.. Thats the key.. I would say any of the economical savages. Shoot I saw new Stevens 200's the other day in .270 and 7mm-.08 for $169. They shoot well.

Again, it comes down to "How much money?"

For $169 the Stevens are really hard to beat for factory new. At $1,690 no Stevens rifles would get a glance, let alone real consideration.

Give me $400 or more and I'll look for a new $399 Weatherby or a Marlin or Savage or a used Ruger/Remington/Winchester.

The MOST ACCURATE out of the box, it would be the SAVAGE hands down period!!!

I have owned a Savage and a Tikka and own neither. The Tikka was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned...SS .308 T3 topped with a Kahles KX 3-9x42. Never fired a handload thru it only Federal premium ammo. I could never own a current design Savage or Tikka ever again. Accuracy is nice but only part of the equation.

Just wondered...what part of the equation turned you against the Tikka?

How you defining value? MOA or better from standard calibers off the rack works for me. That said, my first rifle ever was a Savage 110E that I bought off a gun table for $150. Put CoreLokt's into a clover leaf all day long. Didn't realize every rifle didn't shoot that way.

We've got Remington's, Brownings, Winchester's, Colt's and some custom's in the family and with frieds. The Savage's always shoot among the best and cost the least.

They get my vote.
