I'm surprised no one has mentioned two cartridges that have truly BTDT on virtually ALL BG,world-wide.Not Internet theory...the 300 Weatherby and the 300 Win Mag.

If you are going to talk "best",you gotta talk globally, and you gotta talk everything, under every conceivable condition...most of the choices here are Lower 48,(where almost everything works, cause we don't really have much BG in the overall scheme of things;and what we do have is easy to kill)which means you aren't taking into account the plains and bushveldt of Africa and the huge variety of animals that live there;nor the mountains of Asia, where a short short can be 400 yards. And game can range in size from under 100 pounds to close to a ton.

If I were lucky enough to be able to hunt in all those places for the very wide variety of non-dangerous game and conditions encountered, these two would be at the top of my list, with a magnum capacity 7mm as a close second, loaded with the best heavily constructed bullets I could get.

The 300 Weatherby and 300 Win can both be loaded with the standard fare for average stuff, pointy high BC bullets at high velocity for wind bucking and flat trajectory, and heavy, sturdily constructed 200-220 gr bullets for crunching bigger animals at close range.

They have been the choice of globe-trotting BG hunters for decades, taking everything from elephant and buffalo at rock throwing distance, to markhor, mountain nyala and Asian sheep in wind-swept mountains at long distances;plus everything from pronghorn to Brown Bear here, with no compromise.

These, along with some variety of 375,are truly at the top of the heap when any discussion of "best" pops up.Nothing else does all these jobs as well as a magnum capacity 30, in a rifle you can lug around, and still manage well..The other stuff can't hang.....JMHO smile

Very good point Bob, I think if one were to look at past Weatherby award winners they would find that a large percentage of those guys used one of those cartridges.

It has been my experience when meeting guys that hunt ALOT (all over)they tend to keep it pretty simple and straightforward!

Randy: Few things as simple and straightforward as a 200 gr bullet at 3000+ fps. wink

If you can manage the recoil without sacrificing accuracy, of course. smile

I would go with the 300RUM, because of the different loads it will run. I also like the 260 Rem, for the smaller stuff.

300 Weatherby. Used from dik-dik to elephant.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Um, I believe that the .303British, the 7x57 Mauser, the 8x57 Mauser, and the .30-06 Springfield all might have a bit to say about your theory that only the .300 mags have BT/DT on everything.

I second that nomination

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

Just checking...

Simple fact is that any cartridges in the ballistic ranges of the .303Brit/.30-40Krag, x57, x61, or belted mag case derivatives from .264 to .375 will handle anything on this planet, and easily so, as well as having already done so, time and again.
