Does anyone have any info on a 338-284? I'm looking for dies and loading information? I recently purchased one from a fellow board member and am trying to decide if I want to buy dies and shoot it, or rebarrel? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Raghorn

That rifle was listed on GunsAmerica for awhile.......The Gun Room was the seller and they had dies and ammo with it, along with a Pentax 3X9 scope.......I spoke with them and almost bought it at $600......would have bought it when it came up for sale on the board, but you beat me to it......anyway, might call The Gun Room and see if they still have the dies??? You can use 338-06 load data. THE GUN ROOM 1595 Carr Lakewood, CO 80214 303-237-1300 denvergunroom@aol.com

That was my gun, I traded it in at the gun room over a year ago. They should still have the dies and about 50 rounds of loaded ammo. 210 grain partitions with, I think, with around 54 grains of imr 4320. These loads came with the gun when I bought it used from another gun shop in Denver. Nice little gun, shoots good, but you need to have the fed rails and follower worked on to get it to feed better.

I called the gun room today and they said they no longer had the dies? Bummer! If dies don't show up, I may just part it out and hold the action for a donor. Raghorn

One of the reasons I didn't buy it when the gun room had it was because they didn't know much about the rifle.......they had no idea what kind of barrel was on it and no idea who did the gunsmith work on it.......do you know???
They also told me it had no feeding/function problems.......and shot great.....

I don't know who did the gunsmithing on it either. I bought it because it was a cool little combo, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it because I already had a nice 338-06 that Charlie Sisk built me. I will be swining buy the gun room next week and I will see if they have any idea where the dies are.

I have done many of the 228/284s and they all shot very well. Velocity close to factory 338 Mag with a shorter barrel. Dies are available from CH4D dies at a reasonable price. Recoil is very light compared to other big bores. Certainaly worth the cost of the dies. Ammo is easy to make as all you do is fire factory 284 loads in 7mm down the bore and the case fireforms nicely to the 338 calibre. If you want loading info you can find it in Handloader #162 or I can scan it and send it to you.
Aloha, Mark

Ordered dies, bullets, and brass today! I'll let you know how it performs in a few weeks. Raghorn
