New member here. I found a nice original 99H Takedown in 303 Savage, probably 95% condition overall. 1920's gun with no modifications and no cracks in the wood. Barrel is nice and tight in the receiver. Perfect bore. The shop wants $795.00 and won't budge on the price. Is this a good buy?

well as I don't think they made a 99H in a take-down, I would say there has probably been some modifications...or...

My guess is you are referring to an 1899H or a 99F.

If the gun is nearly perfectly original, its probably not a terrible price but you would not be getting any sort of deal on it.

Does it have the high luster bluing?

I have a 99 H takedown; at least as far as I know, that's what it is. Sounds like a fair price. In fact, were it in 30-30, I'd be asking where it is.

The 1899H's were available in solid frame or takedown. This model later became the 99E solid frame and 99F takedown versions in the 20's.

The 99H's were all solid frame and came in several varieties, the first was a version without a schnabel on the forearm and no raised pads on the buttstock by the receiver. The next phase was the version with a barrel band.

First variety:

The 99H's were never a takedown. The 1899H's were often a takedown.

Thank you all. The ser no checks out to 1920s and it must be a 99F. tag on the gun said 99H. I will go and look at it again later today. If its a 99F how does the price sound?

My mistake. Would SN #140xxx be an 1899h or a 99F?

greg, it would be an 1899H. The switch was around 1921.

Joe, tough to tell without seeing it. I'd go with Drew's opinion.

I went to look again. Its marked 1899 and has the striker indicator pin at the rear. Serial no is 254000 range. Gun has the shotgun type steel buttplate with Savage mrkings at the bottom. I was wrong. The gun is about 90% condition with most of wear on the sides of receiver with some very light pin prick pitting. Original sights and screws all good. Price still firm and I came back home without the gun. Tx to every one for your help.

The 1899 stamp doesn't go with the model nomenclature. One of the gotcha's.
